4 Vendors Hop On Skype Bandwagon

July 26, 2006 by Chuck | 0 Comments

Pretty soon the phone companies will have to pay you to use their service… at least if there’s the WiFi around to let you use Skype!

From Ty’s Ebay Blog!

From IT Wire

Four vendors – Belkin, Edge-Core, Netgear and SMC – have launched WiFi phones with an embedded Skype softphone enabling calls to be made from any WiFi hotspot to which users have access. Factor in Skype’s deal with global hotspot operator Boingo, announced last July and things could get really interesting.

According to Skype, the new WiFi phones are easy to use, come with everything built-in to connect to Skype via any personal, business or free public WiFi access point that does not require browser authentication.
“The phones are extremely easy to set-up and use with automatic synchronisation to a Skype account and contacts. The devices support common WiFi encryption protocols including WEP, WPA, and WPA2 with PSK support.”

However users will still need to be accredited for access to any hotspot they want to use, and this is where the agreement between Skype and Boingo could apply, although Skype did not mention this when it announced the new phones.

What If You Don’t Have Room For A Home Office?

July 26, 2006 by Chuck | 1 Comment

work_the_room_wideweb__470x334,0.jpg

From the Sydney Morning Herald

What if you work from home, but just don’t have a spare room to use as your home office? There are lots of clever ways to sneak an efficient workspace into your existing living areas. The best way is with custom-designed cabinetry. You can create a compact home office in all sorts of spots, like the empty space under a staircase, a wide landing or hallway, or the corner of a large living space.

“We like to customise things,” says designer Sarah Davison. “We do a workstation with a cantilevered desk for the computer, and little pencil drawers under the desktop for things like chequebooks and stationery. Then we do another full-height cupboard with doors that open and slide out of sight, to hold the printer, shelves for folders and a couple of hanging file drawers.”

Designer Kellie Murray built her home office in one end of the built-in wardrobes in her children’s toy room.

“The doors are on a 180-degree hinge so they open right up,” she says. “Inside there’s a desk, and a heap of shelves with all my catalogues and folders with my client’s information. Built-in downlighting is important too, and holes drilled in the back of the desk to hide the computer cables.”

Kellie says the key is designing exactly the amount and type of storage you’ll need. “You have to look at what you’ll be using the space for,” she says. “And it should look tidy and be easy to keep neat, with a place for everything.”

If you don’t want the expense of custom-built cabinetry, you can buy all-in-one workstations from retailers like Ikea, Freedom and Officeworks. But make sure they’re in a material that works with the rest of your living space.

Another option is to use a partition or screen to hide a home office in the corner of a room.

“You could use sheer curtains hung from the ceiling to divide the space,” says designer Corrina Anderson-Allsop, of Creative Space Interiors. “You can close them off for privacy or keep them open, and they add a lovely, luxurious feel to the space.”

Secrets of Post Card Marketing for Small Business

July 25, 2006 by Chuck | 0 Comments

Bob Leduc of BizTipsLetter.com

“What was the best response you ever got to a marketing postcard and is it something that is still working now?”

* Answer:
To be accurate, I have to answer your question twice …first for postcards sent to existing customers then for postcards sent to complete “strangers”.

(1) The best response I got (and still occasionally get) with postcards was over 50 percent. It’s a postcard sent to recent customers with a specific offer related to what they just bought.

(2) The best response I got to postcards sent to people who were not already customers was about 29 percent. It’s a postcard I developed and used to recruit new independent sales reps for a financial services company.

Yes. It’s still working now. Most of my current customers and clients currently using that same postcard in other industries tell me they get up to about 20 percent replies.

That postcard is so effective – and so easily adapted to any business – that I selected it as one of the sample postcards to illustrate in my manual.

Note: The new 2006 edition of Bob’s manual, “How to Build Your Small Business Fast With Simple Postcards”, contains specific details for marketing with postcards …including illustrated samples of postcards with sales messages you can
duplicate and use. For information about it go to:

How can I earn a living by online bookselling?

July 25, 2006 by Chuck | 0 Comments

I found this interesting as someone who purchases dozens of used books on Amazon.com and to a lesser extent Half.com. I find that many of the books can be purchased for the price of media mail shipping $3.49 + a few bucks making my average book purchase $6 to $10 and most of that going to the post office.

I assume that this person who “makes” $2300 is clearing that much after expenses.

If so, that’s pretty good… If they sell 15 books a day or about 300 to 500 per month, that’s an average profit of  $5.75 per book after Amazon (or whoever) takes their cut.

But what is that per hour?

If the person is having to find all these books too… lug them, package them, mail them, etc. what’s the revenue per hour?

The biggest potential for increasing profits is likely follow up sales to these customers.

Does this person have a strategy to stay in touch?

Can they create information products (digital) to sell for higher revenues too?

Are their public domain older books they can scan and sell the digital product for 100% profit?

Just wondering. Great post Steve.
From Steve Weber:

QUESTION: I sell books on Amazon and have excellent ratings. I sell about 15 books a day and earn $2,300 a month, but that’s not enough. I’m a graduate student, so I have income from instructorships, but I also have a family and children. Is there any way to increase my sales?

ANSWER: Try not to be discouraged, I think you’re doing well, making more than $2,000 a month selling books part time. That’s probably better than most of us are doing. And the longer you do it, the better you’ll become at finding valuable books.

Lots of people are working full-time waiting tables and driving taxicabs, yet making less than $2,000 a month.

I know how it is to feel you aren’t earning enough. On the other hand, I feel fortunate to earn a good living selling books, which I enjoy so much.

There’s always a debate over whether things are getting better or worse, or whether it’s possible to earn a “living wage.” There’s an raging debate on Amazon’s seller discussion board on that right now. The original poster seems to be complaining about making $600 to $700 a week.

Everything is relative. I read somewhere that the key to wealth is not earning a lot, but simply spending a bit less than you earn.

The only way to do better at online bookselling is to keep doing it and getting better. Easier said than done.

Outraged Ebayers Launch Protest Auctions

July 25, 2006 by Chuck | 0 Comments

From AuctionBytes Via PowerSellerKing

Outraged at auction fee increases for eBay Stores… one ebayer tries to demonstrate the “Core” of the problem.

One listing stated that the auction for “eBay’s ear” is the seller’s contribution to restore the magic store sellers seem to have taken from eBay, referring to eBay CEO Meg Whitman’s comments to analysts on Wednesday that, “The marketplace has been overwhelmed with identical, often poorly-priced items that have diluted the magic of the eBay experience.”

Other items with “fee hike” in the listing title included: a Fog Machine, for “blowing smoke…”; an eBay Stores Fee Hike Official Paddle” (because, “If you have an eBay store, you are UP SHEE-YUT CREEK WITHOUT A PADDLE!”; a scarf to cry in; and even an “eBay Store Burial Plot.”

Confessions of a Work At Home Writer

July 25, 2006 by Chuck | 0 Comments

What a relief, someone actually said what we knew all along… working at home can be hard work.

It requires discipline we wonder if we have.

It demands compartmentalization in an uncompartmentalized environment.

The 30 second commute offers little time to put on our “business face”.

The distractions in the cubicle which are only daydreams floating through our minds become the real distractions of the TV, the kids, and whatever else there’s fun at hand to do.

But still, all things considered…

Selling Laminated Plaques From Home

July 25, 2006 by Chuck | 0 Comments

Have you ever gone into someone’s home, office, or business and seen a newspaper article elegantly preserved and framed?

People love seeing themselves in print and like sharing the news with their family, friends, customers, and patients.

Here’s a home business opportunity I saw recently. I can’t vouch for the company, but some of you have enough skill to figure out how to do this on your own so I thought I’d pass this along to get you thinking.

From Craigslist

Do you enjoy working with products that help customers feel good about themselves? If so, we have an immediate opening for a Sales Representative.

At That’s Great News (www.thatsgreatnews.com) we sell elegant, museum-quality laminated plaques of articles to individuals and companies that have recently been prominently featured in publications throughout the country. It’s one of the easiest products to sell ….. Our Sales Representatives find “positive related articles from local and regional newspapers, business journals and magazines. You then find the contact information on who the article is written about; contact them via the telephone and go through a tested 14 point selling script (below in bold is the first point) ending with a “30 Day Money Back Guarantee on all of our products.

People Notice Professionally Mounted Articles

Think about it. How many people actually saw your article? How many people did more than glance at it? How many people actually read some of it? Did you know that more people read articles that are professionally framed and mounted than ones they run across in a magazine or newspaper? Especially when it’s hanging in someone’s office, a conference room, a waiting room or a high traffic area.

You will drive sales by helping your customers display their recognition. These recognition pieces are:

•Personal Achievements & Awards
•Company Achievements
•Restaurant or Company Reviews
•Unique
•Ego Gratifying
•“Pat on the Back
•Found in local & regional newspapers, business journals and magazines

The Sales Representative needs to have the following skills:
•Aptitude for Direct Selling over the telephone
•Experience in developing relationships with key customers.
•Great interpersonal skills
•Good attention to detail and diligent follow-up

Specifically this Sales Representative will:
•Subscribe to local and regional publications
•Effectively identify “positive related articles that you could see being displayed on a beautiful mahogany or piano black museum quality plaque in their office or conference room wall.
•Work flexible hours and be persistent in reaching potential customers.

Compensation:
•Our model is set up as if you were in business for yourself
•There is no top end on what you can earn
•You earn 40% of the gross profit of every plaque sold, or approx $50-$60/ea.

Your investment:
•A phone, desk, computer, and scanner
• Subscribe to local and regional publications (magazines, newspapers, business journals)
• $1.75 per proof for every proof you want to send a potential customer. Our closing rates approach 50% once a customer has seen a proof.

If you have a desire to work for yourself, make your own hours and earn anywhere from $180/day (sell 3 plaques/day) to $420/day (sell 7 plaques/day) or more then please visit our Careers section of our website (http://www.thatsgreatnews.com/s.nl/sc.267/.f) to download and fill out an application. If you have any questions please email careers@thatsgreatnews.com. No phone calls please.
