Have a great following on Twitter? Do you have many friends, fans, readers or other audience? If you can resist the temptation to do nothing but tweet Amazon Associate links, you can at least potentially get paid for what you’re reading, listening to, or using that’s for sale at the online giant.

That’s because Amazon now allows Associates to “Share on Twitter”. When you’re an Associate, and you’re logged into your account, you can view any product page and click “Share on Twitter”.

How do you comply with the FTC on this? I have no idea. Put it in your profile? 140 characters definitely limits your disclaimers! With the next to nothing you may earn from this anyway, will a disclaimer be needed? I don’t know … so use at your own discretion!

Here’s what you’ll see on Amazon as of (from what I can tell) yesterday when you’re logged into your account!

NonProfits who use this could simply say “Fundraiser” prior to tweeting. That might be a good thing for them! I’m sure this will catch on…just don’t abuse it!

Happy Tweeting.

While the creators of Twitter may be wondering still how to actually make any money from their platform, big business can see dollar signs already! According to the article Tweets For Hire! More Big Businesses Hire Tweeters:Multinational corporations, such as Ford Motor Co. and Coca-Cola Co., are beginning to use social media to increase positive sentiment, build customer rapport and correct misinformation, says Adam Brown, Coca-Cola’s Atlanta-based director of social media.

Unlike Twitter, these firms already have mechanisms in place to make money. They just need a way to connect with their existing clientele, build rapport, and give their brand some “persona”.

Smart companies also use it to respond quickly to customer ideas and complaints by searching Twitter for mentions of their names or products. Even Washington DC monitors Twitter to see how much they can get away with unawares. Despots in Iran hated it so much they tries to shut down access to it of course.

Can you engage people on Twitter? It may allow you to create your next work at home business opportunity!

You have a business target in mind. You know that if you can meet Person X, you can likely do some business. But this person seems completely unreachable through ordinary means. The corporate voice mail tree sends you exactly where it’s designed to send you – to voice mail hell.

If you could connect someway and at least get to a “yes” or “no”, life would be much easier. You’d stop daydreaming about the big sale and at least get back into reality.

So how could you contact this person? Think Twitter! Here’s what the New York Times has to say: Uncovering Connections on Twitter Could Become Big Business

It’s an interesting thought for sales people seeking a new way of getting real world referrals in the Web 2.0… in the world of Facebook and Twitter, making contact with your real prospects is possibly easier than ever.

How could this help your business?

OK, so who’se on Twitter – besides the spammers of course. We all know about them.

Here’s the Twitter account I set up for this blog ChuckWAH. It at least serves to point back to the articles here. I’m not saying I’ve created a “strategy” for it’s use.

On my personal account I’ve used the site for non profit ventures.

Creating a “strategy” involves knowing lots of things, in particular, who is using Twitter?

On that note here’s an excellent article from eMarketer about who’s on Twitter.

53% are women. Most are under 25. But there are plenty of older “fish” in that pond too if that’s your market. 5% of users provide 75% of the “tweets”.

More tweets = More followers often. Or is that the other way around?

Smart marketers use the site for research. When the Air Force sent a jetliner unannounced into New York giving an entire city bad flashbacks, they used Twitter (in part) to guage the outrage.

Big companies that are already doing ok like Zappos.com use Twitter to show a “personal side”.

Microusers are finding ways to promote some, but lots of people who follow you because you’re a person may unfollow you if you start sending out too many teeth whitening ads – they followed you for your personal comments.

Finding your market and serving it without spamming it are the trick to master as with all media.

SPECIAL OFFER: Want to know some fabulous tips I learned on keyword research the other day for free? You can get them FREE by joining my email update list – I won’t bore you with all the other trash you get in the normal “joint venture” emails, I hate those things too!

Since today is the day Twitter croaked for a couple of hours, step 0 is to make sure Twitter is working?
What I did was to post on FriendFeed which posts to Twitter so the posts will be up when Twitter’s back or use Hoot Suite to schedule tweets later.

Chris Brogan tells how to do it for FREE – without Spam and without using a Third Party firm.

I won’t steal his Thunder or list his points. They’re worth your time reading.

I’ve found Twitter to be great for building a network… not for selling. And the network I’ve built is for my non-profit activities and interests outside making money.

One thing I hate is being spammed by people involved in some game that has you add people to their family or whatever. I don’t have time for games, sorry.

If you’re on to Twitter for a fast buck, I’d say forget it.

You may be able to get readers, visitors, traffic, etc. to a page where you can sell something. If you’re recommending music or a book at Amazon.com you may be able to get some low revenue affiliate sales that way. But big dollar sales? I don’t think they’ll come fast on Twitter.

If you’ve found a way to make that work, let me know!

Yes, Twitter can be a colossal waste of good time. And for that reason, many people aspiring to be online marketers either

1) Drop the service entirely and let their accounts go stagnant or

2) They become engrossed in the minutiae of Twitter and waste valuable time they should spend on real work -or life for that matter.

Of course there is a “via media” or middle way as online professional Guy Kawasaki shows.

He follows everyone who follows him out of courtesy so they can give him direct messages which he prefers to email.

He replies to comments from another Twitter account (easily managed using something like Tweetdeck) to keep his timeline from being cluttered.

And he only replies to comments made to him or for key search terms like his name or business “alltop”.

Most importantly, he uses Twitter because it’s good marketing.

How are you using it?

The usual “received wisdom” for working on Twitter is to follow eveyone who follows you.

There are plusses and minuses to that and my friend Markus Allen makes a good case for NOT FOLLOWING MORE THAN 15 PEOPLE!.

Odds are you’re also wasting too much time on Twitter by schmoozing when all you need to do is spend 3 to 5 minutes and use content that’s already ON TWITTER.

You’ll see what I mean here. But the bottom line is that Twitter is a fantastic SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION TOOL and POSITIONING TOOL above all else.

(I like it because it also lets you update other social networks automatically which Markus doesn’t mention…)

But whatever else you do on Twitter, DON’T just Sell, Sell, Sell!

With zillions of new users and as many spammers it seems, it is harder to find folks who really 1) want your information and whom 2) you may want to network with.

I highly recommend MrTweet.com as a resource for analyzing whom you follow already and whom they follow and suggesting potential people to follow and be followed by.

MrTweet.com has been out of operation for the last few weeks while it upgraded its search facilities, but it’s back strong in recent days and doing a darn fine job of helping you connect with solid people who match your interests.

If you listen to all the chatter about making money on Twitter, you may be disappointed. MrTweet’s not about that. It’s about networking … the help an contacts you get there are amazing.

And traffic to your website can work really well too.

Like most social networking sites, out right selling may not work for you. Links to tips, ideas, resources may work well.
