One part of the Kindle Publishing process is to designate keywords for your books.

As the old saying goes, “never assume”. Never assume you know the right keywords for your book. You want to make sure you’re using keywords that

1. Get Searches and
2. Get Buyers

Here’s how to do that:

A. Use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool

B. After generating a search for raw keywords, sort the keywords by average “Cost Per Click”. The higher the cost per click an advertiser is paying, the more likely that keyword – in practice not theory – means the searcher is a “buyer”

If you can find appropriate keywords for your product that have a high number of searches on Google, plus have a high “Cost Per Click”, that can help you choose the right keyword to use on Kindle to bring paying customers to your book.

A customer of mine posted some incredible results on the Niche Horde forum yesterday, and I had to share it with you.  In case you aren’t aware, Niche Horde is my instant niche market analysis tool that has over 3.7 million keywords pre-analyzed in its database.

I do have one caveat. So called “on page” SEO is a good exercise, but you need “off page” SEO for maximum results. That means in bound links. For that I recommend a product from the same company: 1 Way Links(affiliate link).

By now that phrase is a truism akin to “the sky is blue”.

But in the process of finding the RIGHT keyword, people overloow the PURPOSE for the search in the first place.

For instance, the other day, Markus Allen and I were brainstorming keywords for a publishing project.

By clicking one additional button on the Google Adwords External Keyword Tool results, we could

1) Make a content site FAR more profitable for the owner and
2) Automatically determine whether the keyword indicated that “BUYERS” were clicking that term or “Lookers”.

How? By clicking the button over the keyword results that estimates the average cost per click.

If the cost is a nickel per click, odds are nobody’s buying. If the cost is over a dollar per click, odds are that term is used by people who are serious about doing business.

So as you’re choosing your keywords based on “competition” from other websites, also check to see – are these “buying” words?

Wikipedia’s not paying $7 a click for you to read their free content. But we found some advertisers paying that much for a topic related to a particular information product. See what I mean?

Markus also mentioned a site he found optimized for the term “DIY Home Surveillance” and running Adsense Ads. That keyword generates ads paying 5 cents a click. Had the person optimized the site for “DIY Home Security”, the adsense ads generated cost more like $5! One little change can create a 100 fold improvement! Wow!

So that’s the kind of stuff we talked about on our interview.

It’s a cheap lesson on what NOT to do!

That’s 10 TIMES the amount of surfing done by the nearest competitors at about 6-7% each!

the iPhone operating system having managed over nine times the usage of its next smartphone competitor, Windows Mobile, which had just 6.91 percent of the traffic measured across tens of thousands of sites.

Other smartphone platforms haven’t fared any better, according to the metrics. Google’s Android and Symbian were both locked in a tie for 6.15 percent. Research in Motion’s email-centric BlackBerry OS was used less often at just 2.24 percent and was even outmatched by PalmOS devices, which represented 2.37 percent of cellular web use last month.

Why the particularly wide gap exists between Apple and its rivals hasn’t been explained.

Some puns come to mind – “So Google will be saying ‘cha-cha’ after all?”

But the problem of course is with censorship and the restriction of information.

Google has the appearance of “blind justice” and sells that but it’s ready to pull the plug and advance their own agenda when necessary.

Of course that means the system is exposed to corruption and manipulation… witness how Yahoo turned in anti-government protesters in Mainland China in order to have access to that marketplace.

Who does Google disdain and who will they censor?

The article notes that Google’s ascendancy is on the rise just as possible balancing forces in the media are imploding… not that the main stream media was ideologically different than Google in any way.

Of course with so many searches, perhaps “long tail keywords” are relatively safe. But the Blagojevich factor can apparently raise its ugly head even in the supposedly objective halls of Google.

Till then, we only had to worry about .com,.net,.info,.us,.biz etc. domain extensions.

And most small time marketers still won’t have to worry much… unless they have $185,000 to invest in a unique top level custom domain name to host content like webpage.customextension

In other words, as this article speculates there could be extensions like .coca-cola or whatever they want.

That price tag puts the hurt on domain squatters snatching up $10 domain names.

But it also puts the hurt on trademark owners who can’t plop down $185,000 for every permutation of their brand!

How will it all play out?

Who knows.

But now you know what to look for…

One problem many people have is getting one way links for niche marketing websites.

You can do article submissions.

You can do forum posts.

You can do classified ads.

You can do blog commenting.

You can do a combination of these.

I used to do paid article submissions… pretty good value way back when.

They all take some combination of time and money and an iron will.

And they can quickly become very frustrating… unless you can hire someone reliable to do all this for you. And that can be pretty costly. If it costs you over 6.5 cents a link… you’re paying too much for those first 750 links per month.
