Exactly a week ago, Google quietly rolled out its Panda update 2.5.2 -

Google’s propaganda minister (er, I mean public relations’ spokesman Matt Cutts) called it a “minor algorithmic update.”

Yeah right. I’d hate to see a major update…

… Because even the most legitimate website owners are screaming about this “Google Whack.”

Some are reporting an 80% drop in traffic.

And these sites are pure content – no spam.

But the good news is I got my greedy little hands on a PDF that Google doesn’t want me to see.
It’s the same exact PDF that Google gives to its employees to manually rank our sites.

And I’m going to reverse engineer it and show you how to slap Google back on today’s teleseminar…

Today, Dilbert reports the disastrous results.

Unfortunately they don’t seem to be that much different than many experience using “White Hat techniques now that we know (?) Google operators can manually unrank a site!

The problem is that still – for many – well performing pages on “authority” sites like Hub Pages got slammed and made the Hub Page folks overreact and anger their writers. I know they made me mad!

For many, this may be good news. I just hope my site keep cranking out higher Adsense earnings!

At last week’s SMX Advanced conference held in Seattle SearchEngineLand.com’s founder, Danny Sullivan, interviewed the head of Google’s Webspam team, Matt Cutts, for one of the keynotes.

During the discussion, Cutts said that Google will soon be rolling out an update to its Google Panda algorithm, which is widely considered to be one of the biggest changes Google has made to its complex internal search algorithm over the last few years.

Panda, released in February, was designed to identify low-quality pages and websites and eliminate duplicate content by penalizing these low-quality sites by dropping their Google rankings – dramatically. In some cases, it has been reported that sites have taken up to a 65 percent hit to their traffic based on significantly lower rankings in Google.

Although Cutts did not give an exact time frame for the rollout (beyond saying “soon”), he did note that the update, Panda 2.2, will address a common complaint that the original Panda (also called Farmer) sometimes favored websites that scrape and republish content, ironically giving those sites a higher ranking than the original source of the content.

Cutts also said that no manual exceptions made to sites that were wrongly impacted, but there have been recompilations of data that may have helped some websites.

 

In particular Demand Media was targeted. You’ve probably never heard of them but you’ve seen their sites like “eHow”.

Here’s how they do business according to Business Insider (link below):

Demand makes much of its money by…

1. Figuring out which search results pages are the most expensive for search advertisers to put keywords on.

2. Hiring a freelancer to create content that relates to those search results pages.

3. Putting that content on good domains and SEO-ing the hell out of it.

4. Selling Google ads next to that content.

5. Doing this on a massive scale.

It’s Google arbitrage.

And actually some of the material is not too bad.

And evidently it complies with Google’s Terms of Service or else they’d just yank Google Adsense.

But Google must not any single entity grabbing a disproportionate amount of first page rankings so rather than just manually exclude all “eHow” pages from the index, it’s trying to find a way to do that indirectly.

What this means for the average person? It remains to be seen.

It’s definitely another reason to build your own in house mailing list so  you have an opportunity to  drive visitors on demand.
