The cost of producing audiobooks and ebooks and delivering them is falling through the floor. One major pubisher is using that fact to boost the sale of their paper and ink books. By using the falling price of technology in this way they can keep selling their bread and butter – traditional books which people still like at the right price!

Here’s how that publishing CEO describes their strategy: Nelson Free – More Book Formats for One Price

The NelsonFree program allows readers to experience their content in multiple formats—the physical book, the audio book, and the e-book—without making multiple purchases. Traditionally, if readers want something beyond the printed word, they have to buy another copy of the same book. With NelsonFree, the everyday price of the hardcover book includes both the audio and the e-book.

Internet marketers wanting to break into print have done something similar in the past.

They have told people that when they purchase a book at Amazon.com or Barnes and Nobles to

1) Visit the website

2) Type in their receipt number

3) Download “valuable” freebies.

They’ve even created back end profits by giving these purchasers unique “one time offers” of digital products that put more money in their pockets.

How can work at home entrepreneurs adapt this?

1. Read the ebook you want to sell into an audio format!
2. Make a free “Jing” online video to support your ebook
3. Create a membership site or forum
4. Create a “One Time Offer” or other back end product to boost business

This is a story about a company hiring someone to surf MySpace to generate marketing buzz. It’s interesting reading and is a free (except for the cost of the employee and the creative talent which means it’s not completely free) to implement.

But at the very least, even small businesses need to exploit the use of social media and user generated content to get the most bang for their online buck.

It’s becoming a common practice to search MySpace for profiles of potential applicants. In fact, it can keep you from working and landing lucrative contracts because what you put there (unless you remove it of course) can show potential bosses what they consider your “dark side” or the “down side” that will emerge once you’re working and your happy interview face is off.

Think ahead.

Whether you want to be an employee or entrepreneur, MySpace can come back to bite you.

When Steve Weber started marketing his book. He did what everyone told him to do and ended up spending $20 on marketing for every book sold. Here’s what really worked:

1. Blogging
2. Myspace
3. Free Review Copies ONLY FOR AMAZON TOP REVIEWERS

From the Small Press Blog HT Steve Weber

How did you learn the techniques in “Plug Your Book?”

SW: It was all quite by accident. I didn’t relish the idea of spending time on book promotion. When I started promoting my first book, Google advertising was all the rage. I’d heard these “pay-per-click” ads were really effective, so I bought thousands of dollars worth of Google and Yahoo ads. I also tried other expensive things that turned out to be ineffective, like hiring an expensive publicist and mailing thousands of review copies.

All those things that sounded like great ideas were horrific failures — I was spending $20 on marketing for every $1 of sales. So I ditched my traditional marketing campaign. I started blogging, joined MySpace, and worked at getting some Amazon Top Reviewers to read and review my book. That’s when my book started selling, and it was such a revelation. All those things I’d been spending money on were a waste of time, while the grassroots techniques that cost virtually nothing were extremely effective. I though it would be very helpful for new authors to know about these techniques, and that was the inspiration for “Plug Your Book.”

Are you a total introvert who can’t make cold calls to save your life (or business)? But once people meet you you seem to be able to pick up business and take orders?

If that’s the case you need some way to mobilize massive numbers of people to get to know you. It’s hard. You have to seek innovative ways… and usually the best way is to talk about stuff that interests THEM not just things that interest you (like selling your product or service).

Here’s something you might try. I’d pick a non controversial topic so you don’t make your business an object of PROTEST instead of PATRONAGE!

There’s quite a bit of buzz about “Transit Camp”. Some Toronto residents got together to brainstorm ways to improve the Toronto Transit system.

Instead of just being a “complaint department” they wanted to become a “solutions playground”.

You can read more about it here at worldchanging.com

As an “unconference”, it’s designed to be – pop phrase warning – a “leaderless” organization and has these 3 rules as a “camp”:

Everyone participates.

Leaders can emerge from anywhere.

We are all equals in an open community.

If you have a pet peeve and a way to make money online (or way to make money offline if you’re setting up a forum that addresses a local issue) perhaps you could facilitate a “camp”.

I saw someone else try to take the concept online using a free wiki site, PBwiki.com

Maybe facilitating a “campe” is the fun and rewarding method you need to “prospect” and develop contacts who will begin to know like and trust you and do business with you?

Social media is elbowing its way into corporate America, and it’s doing so more quickly than anticipated, according to a recent study by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The school’s Center for Marketing Research surveyed last year’s Inc. 500 to see how the nation’s fastest–growing private companies were leveraging social media. A full 66% of surveyed companies say that social media is either “very important” or “somewhat important” to their business/marketing strategy.

Other results:

* 42% say they are familiar with social networking, 38% with message/bulletin boards, 36% with blogging, 31% with online video, 30% with podcasting, and 16% with wikis.

* 33% say their company uses message/bulletin boards, 27% social networking, 24% online video, 19% blogging, 17% wikis, and 11% podcasting.

Retailers are taking a page from MySpace. They know that customers, especially the younger and more Net-savvy, want to be heard, and they also want to hear what others like them think. So increasingly, retailers are opening up their Web sites to customers, letting them post product reviews, ratings, and in some cases photos and videos. The result is that customer reviews are emerging as a prime place to visit for online shoppers.
