There are two type of people in the world. Those who see the glass half empty and those who see it half full. This experience was heightened for me when I had lunch with an old colleague from work and he began to complain about how only rich people could start a business.I thought he was joking.

As I sat and listened he ranted for almost ten minutes giving all the reasons he could not start his own business and get out of the rat race. He talked about the high cost of start ups, franchising and real estate development. When he finally came up for air I decided to ask simply ask him one question.

“Have you every asked yourself what kind of low cost businesses with high profit margins are out there?”

He looked like he had been run over by a truck. I went on to say, “You are just asking the wrong question.” He sat for a minute and said, “Ok, if you’re so smart give me some ideas.” I said, “Great. Oh and by the way let’s make it fun and focus on the ones you can work from home in your pajamas.”

Here are the 5 low cost high profit businesses worth considering:

1. Internet Marketing: Do you have a computer in your home? If so you could be sitting on a gold mine. People use the internet to do all types of things. From a multimillion dollar wire jewelry making enterprise to a young kid from Long Beach California who created his empire teaching people how to play music by ear. Everyday people are getting on the internet and pursuing their own dot com fortune.

While there’s no “guaranteed” or “easy way” to make money selling on the Internet, it’s still possible and it is still inexpensive to start. Frankly many people just start “somewhere” and “bum around” until they either quit in defeat or find something that produces enough income to keep them interested.

2. Tele-seminars or Webinars: If you not a very technical person one of the best strategies is tele-seminars or webinars. With simply a telephone and a conference call line for your guest to call in on you can offer a class or seminar. With a service like “Go To Meeting” it’s even simpler! You can either use these services as a lead generator or you can sell your product or service from the seminar itself. An additional product can come from recording the class. Once you record the class it can become an instant product you can create passive income from.

I know one bright guy who uses a free internet “radio”, does a “show” weekly people can listen to for free and then sells access to all the old shows. Because he offers loads of useful information, his free “broadcasts” make for a solid information package entrepreneurs willingly pay for unlimited access to. You can hear one of those free broadcasts here - Stump Markus

3. Joint Ventures: If you like the idea of not needing a product or money of your own than the idea of joint venturing could be for you. This business is simply the art of the deal. You are paid in direct proportion to your ability to bring together two parties who would not otherwise know each other outside of your introduction.

For example if you combine company A’s products, knowledge, resources and partner it with company B’s client list you get to share in the profits. And it would not cost you one cent.

If you’re a natural networker, “barter” agent, etc. working online can help you develop leads for many opportunities to serve as a “finder”.

4. Affiliate Marketing: What if someone else did most of the work but you got to share in the profit pie? Well, that is what affiliate marketing is all about. There are thousands of products ranging from digital down loads, books, seminars not to mention hard products like computers, cell phones and other techie stuff. Your job is to find the products that your market is interested in and when you sell something you get a percentage of the sale. You can do this without having any inventory or the overhead of a traditional business.

If you can find a product you love and combine it with a growing set on online marketing skills, it’s possible to make money by affiliate marketing.

5. Information Products: This is one of the most highly lucrative low cost businesses you can get into. If you have specialized knowledge or can do you can research and report on it you can create products that are highly profitable. For example, one of the fastest ways to success is to interview experts in a high demand niche market.

Once you have interviewed these experts you can take the information and create several different products from the one interview. Some of the things you can do is sell the recording itself, sell the transcript of the call, use some of the content create an e-book or report or take several of the interviews and put them together for an expert tape series.

These days, being a Kindle Publisher is the fastest way to turn your specialized information in to recurring monthly income without any special knowledge of internet marketing required on your part.

6. Network Marketing/MLM: I have always been a fan of network marketing because the business model is as much about self-development as it is building a business. The premise is you find a company that you are passionate about the product, has a proven system and strong team leadership. Most of these companies are low cost of entry. And you build your empire leveraging the efforts of many.

Tom Schreiter of FortuneNow.com is my favorite expert on the subject.

Some people incorrectly believe you are going to get rich off the back of someone else. Not true. The very core of network marketing is built on the fact that you get paid in direct proportion of your ability to recruit, train, inspire, support and lead a voluntary group of people. For those who can do this the rewards are great.

Are you looking for a business you can start without breaking the bank? The above businesses are just a few ideas to jump start your thought process. However, make no mistake you can start a low cost high profit business and enjoy it while lounging in your pajamas.

Ok as you’re thinking about how to get some momentum next year for your home business, here are some thoughts as you prepare for the new year.

Be honest with yourself. Are you one of those people that believe that you just don’t have the time to get your home business up and running? You’re not alone. Many people I talk to claim they have too much to do and not enough time to do it. They wind up defeating themselves and their business looses momentum and suffers.

Full time jobs, family obligations, maintaining health and too many other distractions are the main reasons for not building momentum for their business. You can wind up feeling that your life is spent catering to every one else’s obligations.

However, I have some good news! You can find and maximize time to build momentum for your home business. All you need is to find time and commit to use that time for your home business only. Try the following strategies to make your home based business flourish.

Document Your Daily Routine

The first thing you will need to do find a quiet place and write down your schedule. Document the start and end time on events like getting ready for work, driving your kids to school, your commute to your day job, gym time and any other weekly commitments you have. Don’t forget to include weekends and family time (this is most important).

After completing this exercise you should have a good visual of what your work week looks like. You should see openings in your week. Make your goal easy: try to find two hours you can commit to spend on your business. You should be able to re-prioritize some time.

When can you work? Will you work? That’s the question.

Stay with the Schedule You Created and Re-Evaluate

The next thing you need to do is stick with your schedule. This can be tough because you are creating a new habit. Once you get the hang of your new routine, you should always re-evaluate your schedule. You may be able to find more time to spend on your home business.

Sticking with your schedule means you need to discipline yourself to work. This means that you have to find a way after work, after little league games, after dinner and after putting the kids to bed.

Like with most things in life, your idealized view of your schedule will be decimated by reality. Think “Ready, Fire, Aim”. Get a rough idea of what you can do, try it, adjust, and try again.

Don’t Forget Your Family.

Spending time with my family is always a top priority for me. I have young children so I try to focus on the business when my kids are in bed. I find that using the evening hours is best for me to spend on my home business. It seems to be the most quite part of the day.

If you have to use your family time to spend on your business, make sure you communicate with your family so they have an expectation of what you are doing. However, I would recommend that you set a time limit so you can spend that time you want with your family. This will provide balance for you.

As children grow older and more responsible putting them to work in your business will help them and you. After all, you want them to learn how to run a business one day?

Embrace Distractions

As we all know life also throws us off schedule. Try your best to embrace that fact instead of fighting it. If your child stays up late, focus on helping your child quiet down and go to sleep. Try not to focus on what you could be doing. Don’t worry. The work will still be there when you are ready.

If you have to stay late at your day job, then choose to work late. Usually, you’ll find that it is better just to focus on one thing at a time. You’ll be more efficient and effective. Having a clear and guilt free mind while working on your business is most productive.

To handle new ideas that can distract you while you are working, keep an MP3 Recorder handy so if an idea comes up you can record it or write down the idea in a notebook. You can always prioritize those thoughts at a later time. You will also find that you are using less energy dealing with distractions instead of fighting them.

“Wherever you are, be there” is a good rule. Focus on what you’re doing at the time so that when you can devote time to your home business it will be purposeful.

Find People You Can Work With

From time to time, you’ll have people offer you work or people who just swap good ideas with you. You’ll be independent, but in some ways you’ll be “comrades in arms”. So make friends, learn from friends, and don’t try to be a “loner” in your home business. The more you can network and learn (as long as you actually DO your work) the more you can earn long term.

So there is good news when it comes to finding time to work on your own business. Don’t despair and don’t get frustrated. Just remember that you have total control of your time and you alone can change your habits to build your businesses momentum.

Most people who start work at home business just begin where they are. Relocation isn’t usually a factor in the equation. But if you are moving somewhere and want to make sure you keep your home business options open for the future – or like an acquaintance online who has an established home based business you want to relocate – you might want to keep an eye on places conducive to starting up a new business.

If that’s your aim, check out the article: Where To Be An Entrepreneur It’s about 10 startup-friendly cities–and their respective success stories.

I like the success stories as much as the city information, and I was surprised to learn that there were cities across the nation in most regions (I didn’t notice New England or any place from Washington DC northward) that were highlighted.

I think that when cities appear that didn’t strike you as very “entrepreneur friendly” appear on such lists from all over the country, you may just find you’re in a place where creating a new business for yourself is easier than you imagine. Even if you’re not planning to move, you may gain greater confidence in yourself and your ability to start a business if even places in the “rust belt” can spawn new life.

How’s your work at home business doing these days? Has the economy got you down? Are you waiting for business conditions to improve?

Here’s a post from Jim Whelan that is worth considering:

At a breakfast roundtable this morning I heard all kinds of excuses about performance. They were all laughable. Maybe not to those who believe this kind of crap, but they certainly were to me.

Now I heard any number of things, pure pessimism, stock market theories, fierce competition, prospects saying no, and then the one that really got to me, waiting for business conditions to pick up.

That one really threw me for a loop.

Successful salespeople sell in all kinds of conditions. One of my friends was in the middle of a sales presentation to a Thai family when the power went out. He went to his truck, pulled out two powerful flashlights, and brought them inside.

The flashlights helped the family find candles, and he finished his presentation, and did all the paperwork by flashlight, and candlelight. That was a $38,000.00 deal.

Almost everybody else I know would have packed it in when the power went out. This same salesperson once drove over two hours to see a prospect, a farmer. When he arrived, the farmer was on the roof of his barn, and refused to come down, saying he changed his mind. My friend calmly removed the ladder from the side of the barn, and told the farmer he could stay on the roof as long as he liked.

Then he walked back to his truck with the ladder.

Suddenly, the farmer had another change of heart. Two hours later they wrapped up a $30,000.00 deal.

Sales ain’t bean bag.

Just like the Marines, you adapt and improvise, depending on the conditions you find. I often surprised prospects by showing up in the middle of a storm. Believe me, it isn’t hard to close those deals.

Business conditions will never be ideal. The market will never do just exactly what analysts think. What benefit can you possibly get by waiting?

I can guarantee you one thing you’ll get by waiting.

No sales.

No revenue.

No paycheck.

That certainly is not a pretty picture.

What all these excuses boil down to is fear. And any salesman with fear in his heart is not going to be successful.

Good salespeople need to get positive, and stay positive. If you follow that simple rule, you’ll weatherproof yourself.

From the big saddle,

Jim Whelan
The Chairman of the Board

The Work At Home Expo 2007 is now letting exhibitors register for their May online event.

I was pretty heavily involved in trade shows a while back… the hotel kind. The issue most exhibitors have is that they don’t generate leads because they can’t attract people to their booth for more than grabbing free pens and novelties. You have to have some way to interact with people or they’ll just glance at you out of the corner of your eye. That means lots of booth rentals produce zero leads because the folks just stand there and they don’t “work the floor”.

Online exhibitors as a result should stand a better chance at turning their dollars into leads as long as they get to put their face in front of the web cam at an online event.

From their press release

Online expos are nothing new, there are many organized and carried out through the year. What sets this venture apart is the fact that participants will be connected live via a voice enabled web conference room that can be accessed by both Mac and PC systems. The direct connection brings the entire experience up to a level that closely resembles being at a real live event.

Another difference is the emphasis on education to grow one’s business. Organizers want to provide attendees with more than a sales pitch. Munson says: ‘We do more than show off exhibitors; a major goal is to give home business owners and opportunity seekers a well rounded expo experience that equips them with cutting edge information. We really want them to come away with something more than just a couple of prizes!’ At their first event that was held in November 2006, they had a massive response to their event. Wendy Cooper, co-owner of Business and Learning, states ” We had such a big response to our first event, it was amazing. Our goal is to build on what we experienced the first time around.”

Admission to the Business and Learning Expo is free. You can pop in for any of the scheduled exhibitions to learn more about the products, services and business opportunities offered by the expo exhibitors. There are also daily free networking sessions where you freely interact with other attendees.

The evenings are set aside for keynote messages provided by leaders in the Work at Home industry. Some of the experts include Well known internet marketing expert Kelly McCausey of Work at Home Moms Talk Radio as well as Publicity Expert, Shannon Cherry of Cherry Communications just to name a few! Keynote topics include how to harness the power of a focused business and how to get the most out of your publicity efforts, just to name a few. A complete list of speakers and topics as it develops can be found on the website. http://www.businessandlearning.com.

Most of us “hope” better times are coming.

But hope isn’t a plan.

Do you know the difference?

From the Cognigen Times, September 2006 edition…

Hope Is Not A Plan

One of the philosophies of successful business people is the reality statement that “Hope Is Not A Plan”. This is even addressed with dozens of examples in the new book by Anderson Cooper, television news anchor.

Do you see the difference? Hopefully you do, since the difference between “hope” and “plan” is even more stark than the difference between day and night. You can hope that you ace your physics exam at school. You can hope you get that raise at your job. You can hope you have enough month left over at the end of the money where you can still make your car payment. You can hope that the hurricane sighted in the Atlantic does not make landfall near you next week.

There is nothing wrong with hoping. The very act helps us to understand what we want to accomplish, what we wish for in our lives, in personal relationships, in various activities and endeavors, and yes, frequently in terms of our future financial situation.

But hope is not a plan.

Hope without action almost has negative value. Some experts say that hope in and of itself, with no accompanying plan is nothing more than day-dreaming, and does not really constitute one’s real hope or dreams or goals. Why? Because if it was a REAL hope, then a plan of action would accompany it. Without a plan of action, the hope is nothing, a waste of mental energy.

You can hope you ace your physics exam, but to make that hope a reality, you study, you research, you learn, so that your hope can become a reality. There is the action that can enable your hope to become real. You can hope for a raise at your job, but the action is to know and understand what is required of you to get there and to put that understanding into action. You can hope for financial comfort for yourself and your family, but without a plan to get there — a plan that you create, endorse, and PUT INTO ACTION, that hope is nothing more than a daydream or a passing fantasy.

The people who are most successful in the world today have deployed their action plan. That does not mean that the first plan they came up with is the one they need to live with. Rather, as situations change and circumstances change, the plan is changed accordingly. The key is that they put their plan into action, every day, without fail.

Are you committed to your plan or simply “involved”? As an analogy, think of a good breakfast of ham and eggs. The chicken was involved in making that breakfast possible, but the pig was committed.

….

In say 3-5 years from now, if you keep doing what you are doing now, can you honestly say that you will be where you want to be at that point in the future? If not, then today — right now — is an excellent time to implement your PLAN.
