If you’ve ever wanted to get into an “emerging market”, the two that strike me as very potentially helpful (if uncharted in many ways!) are Kindle Publishing and iphone Applications.

So what’s selling on Kindle these days? Any publisher with any book in print that sells would be crazy not to sell the book on Kindle too. After all, you’ve done all the hard work, it could make you extra money. Or if you were really nice, you’d work out a deal with Amazon that for every full price paper copy someone buys, they’d get a free electronic version. Now that’d be a good deal too.

But that doesn’t mean just any book that sells in print is selling on Kindle.

I asked one real life Kindle publisher who wants to remain anonymous about what is selling well these days.

What you ask?

This title is doing pretty well these days – Basic Canning Tips For Complete Newbies – What You Must Know To Get Started In Canning!

That might not be what you wanted to hear.

But what that means if you’re serving the same markets as the so called “mommy bloggers”, now is the time to be making some money with that kind of content on Kindle!

Here’s more about obtaining the resale rights to that kind of product: Food Related Content

Here’s more on Kindle Publishing

It is quite possible to make money running a day care. Often you can begin earning in your home per state law just to “test the water”. If you like it – you may be able to turn it into a genuine business.

Here are some thoughts on making money that way:

For anyone who enjoys working with children, starting a day care can be a fulfilling and rewarding career. Not only will you be doing what you love to do which is caring for the very young, you are making a good living at it. The size of the day care you start can be as small as hosting a half dozen kids in your home to running a big institution with dozens of kids. The size of the day care is something you have to decide based on what your objectives are as a small business owner will.

But notice that we used that phrase, “Small business owner”. A day care is a business. And as long as you see that and don’t think of your new enterprise as a glorified babysitting service, you will take the right steps from the first moment you get the idea to open your own day care all the way along the line until you are a big success in your new business.

To start your own business of any type requires planning, knowledge of how a successful business of your type runs as well as a firm grasp on who your customers are, how you will bring them to your business and how you will keep them. You also have to know how to respond to problems that will come up as you develop your day care business.

In the case of your day care, you are offering a service and not a product. But you have one huge issue that dominates much of how you set up the business. You are going to be given charge over a significant number of children whom you must care for and keep them safe, fed and relatively entertained all day long. On top of that, you must live up to parents expectations and that can be tough.

At the very least that means you are going to have to invest in facilities that come child proof and are highly durable. Also insurance and compliance with the legalities over day cares is critical to your success. You must not only know how to take good care of children, you have to be prepared for just about anything that can happen to a child. From nausea to injury to fights to good old fashioned home sickness, if you are going to be a success, you must be ready to respond to the crisis that will happen every day to some extent and to respond calmly and professionally.

There are going to be a lot of “hoops to jump through” from a legal and administrative point of view before you can be licensed to open a day care facility. Don’t resent this process, even though it will be demanding and tedious for you to complete it. The parents who come to you to take care of their children want to know you are trained, that your facilities live up to established standards and that you are accountable to the state and medical requirements to be able to operate this kind of facility. The license you get when you open that day care center mean a lot to those parents. And those parents are your customers. So pass all of the preparation requirements with flying colors so you can open your doors with pride.

Even though a day care is oriented toward children, it is grown up work to prepare to open and then operate the facility. Learn all you can before you open by talking to people with experience or even working at a day care center before starting your own. With that knowledge, you will know what is expected of you when its your turn to be the boss of your own day care center.

It’s 107 comments about one or two paragraphs in length from Mompreneurs who have carved out their own niche while caring for their families.

Here’s one of those tips:

Treat Kid Appointments As ‘Meeting Times’

Your kids are as important to you as your business (at least, I hope so!), so schedule time with them and other activities on your calendar. When clients ask if you can meet during such an appointment, just say “Sorry, I’m already booked” or “I have a meeting then that I can’t reschedule.”

Nothing to feel guilty about. Remember, if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. It’s not selfish to take care of yourself — it’s selfish to ignore yourself as it’ll make you grumpy and the grump disease will spread to family and colleagues.

Work at home moms make up a significant and growing portion of home-based business owners and work at home freelance professionals. While there are a lot of perks that come with working at home, the appeal for mothers is often that they’ll be able to spend more time with their children. Keeping that in mind, here is a list of ten home-based business or freelance job ideas that will allow for a flexible schedule that can be worked around family time.

Freelance Writing – Work at home moms can find numerous opportunities for freelance writers, both online and off. Because writing can generally be done at any time, it would be ideal for work at home moms who might only have time to work during occasions where their children are in school or napping. A good resource for moms interested in finding freelance writing clients is www.WritersMarket.com.

Blogging – Similar to other writing fields, blogging can be done at almost any time of day. Most blog networks that hire freelancers have posting requirements on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule, but the time of day that you post is completely adaptable to your own schedule.

eBay – Starting an eBay business is a great option for work at home moms, because most products will sell on a 24-hour basis online without too much supervision. To make an eBay business even more ideal, drop shipping would remove the necessity of storing and managing inventory and making regular post office runs when you would rather spend time with your family.

Child Care – Work at home moms would be ideal for the child care field. If there’s a need in your community, some options would be setting up a home-based day care center or even an after school program for older kids. Depending on where you live, you might need special certifications or licenses, but you would have the added perk of having other children around for your own to play with and socialize with.

Graphic or Web Design – Most design work can be run as an online-only business, meaning you wouldn’t always have to run out to a client’s location for meetings. As long as you regularly answer your email throughout the day, you can concentrate your actual design work during quiet times when the kids are otherwise occupied, or even handle the design work during the evenings.

Tutoring or Lessons – Having students come to your home for tutoring sessions with their schoolwork, or even music lessons, can be easily adapted to fit your family’s typical schedule, such as your child’s nap time, or on weekends when someone else might be around to look after your kids.

Arts and Crafts – If you have any artistic ability, an arts or crafts-related business can be ideal for a work at home mom. You can design jewelry, paint, make candles, or just about any craft you can think of. There is definite potential as you can work on your craft during quiet times or in the evenings, and sell your crafts or art at shows on the weekends. Or, you can sell your products anytime with an online store that will work for you 24-7.

e-Consulting – Similarly to how you can do design work almost entirely online, you can do the same for various forms of consulting if you have the proper training. For instance, you can consult on Web content, do marketing or SEO consulting for website owners, or adapt any kind of expertise into your very own e-consulting firm. Research – Individuals and companies in just about every field have a need for someone to conduct research for them. You can do anything from genealogy research to market research by conducting surveys right from the Web.

Selling Information – Information is still a hot commodity, and these days almost anyone can set up a website. If you create a basic site, you can sell anything from ebooks to podcasts to databases of industry contacts or job listings. The possibilities are endless.

If you’re writing a blog or website aimed at domestic engineers (ok, women who like to cook, maybe some guys too) you’ll want to have a source of Private Label Resale rights that is not the typical lot of trash you find online.

That’s where some people I really respect come in… they have lots of experience with menu planning and they produce some really great PLR on a monthly basis for your website or blog.

It’s YummyPLR (yes, that’s an affiliate link!)

You can buy one time packages of their material or subscribe to their monthly PLR service if you are putting new content on your blog. (And who isn’t putting new content on their blog?)

And you can get free samples of course to see what they offer at YummyPLR .

Here’s how they describe their service:

How to Attract More Readers to Your Mom Blog

If you’ve been on the Internet for more than 5 minutes, you’ve probably heard of the ever growing popularity of the “mom blog.” You may even have one yourself. Mom blogs are great ways to connect with other moms, share your thoughts and feelings on being a mom, and maybe even make a little dough (not the kitchen variety this time) too.

One problem many moms have is getting people to read and participate their blogs. After all, without readers you can’t do any of the things mentioned above with your blog. So, how do you attract more readers to your mom blog? And, once you have them how do you keep them there? Here are a few tried and true ways to increase readership and maybe even make some life long online buds in the mom community.

Be Yourself

No one likes to read a blog that is nothing but a copy and paste of articles, news topics, and pictures. Yes, those things are interesting, but to really get people coming back for more you have to show them you are a real person. Don’t be afraid to let them in and give readers a taste of the true you. If you have an opinion on something don’t be afraid to share it, after all it is YOUR blog so it should represent the person you really are.

Hold a Contest or Giveaway

There’s nothing moms like more than getting free stuff they can actually use. As a mom yourself you probably have or know people who would be willing to donate prizes to a contest or giveaway on your blog. Think of something fun and create or do a random drawing from those who post comments. Get creative and come up with something other moms would be happy to enter and happier to tell their friends about.

Post Reviews

People love to know if something works or doesn’t work before they decide to buy. Have you used products that you think are the greatest thing since sliced bread? Or maybe you want to warn others to steer clear of something you wished you hadn’t wasted your money on. Either way, let your readers know. There are even companies that love to send product samples to mommy bloggers specifically for their opinions. Your opinion does matter, especially because you’re a mother.

Create a Recipe of the Day Section

If there’s one thing all moms are looking for it’s something different for dinner. To feed your reader’s hunger for new meal ideas as well as their family’s bellies, set up a section on your blog dedicated solely to recipes. Post a new recipe once a day. It doesn’t take long and you don’t have to write all (or any) of the recipes yourself if you don’t want to thanks to private label rights (PLR) content.

Mommy blogs are created and visited by others for many reasons, but if yours is informative, comical, shows the true you and gives moms what they are looking for, chances that more readers will come are higher. Enjoy your mommy blog and make it your home sweet home on the web where friends feel welcome and love coming back. Ready to add a recipe section to your blog to increase readers?

You might want to read about The New Breed of Mommy Blogger…

It’s an interesting phenomenon – bloggers who spend as much time promoting their own “brand” as anything else. They promote their blogs by putting out business cards in bookstores, grocery stores, etc. to reach their mommy audience.

And for some this is REALLY paying off… some of the “mommy bloggers” were negotiating deals for free automobiles, free travel to “blogging” conferences, and other perks. The link I’ve mentioned is one of the mommy bloggers who is somewhat aghast at the self-promotion required but looks like she probably has her share of advertising dollars for her trouble – her blog, a blogger one, looks very well designed for a “freebie”.

I find the comments very interesting. There’s a very fine line between content and product placement and some of the mommy bloggers seem too interested in pushing product at times. But then again, I’m not driving a free car as the result of my blogging…

One Nashville TN Certified Public Accountant works from home and earns $80,000 per year. I meant to post this story about a work at home Accountant in Nashville TN before the article had been archived but got behind! According to their findings, there are 14,990 people in Davidson County (Nashville TN) that work at home full time… a huge increase. One person they profiled was a Nashville TN CPA.

In an article titled Number of Nashvillians Working At Home Soaring from Oct 18th we learned about a mompreneur who chose to take her CPA credentials and work at home because of her husbands illness.

I thought it was truly touching that this woman took her wedding vows so seriously that she left the corporate CPA world and opened her own home based practice for tax and payroll clients.

Perhaps she could have earned more playing with the “Big Boy” CPA firms, but generating $80,000 income as a work at home CPA is certainly very respectable! I daresay, most folks working at home would love to be generating that income on a predictable basis.

I don’t think this is all that unusual either. I know a number of Tax Preparers who generated significant income during the “Tax Season” rush and “played” the rest of the time. These people – perhaps only one of whom was a Certified Public Accountant – seemed to build up a clientele that provided “repeat” business from year to year.

The tough part was building that initial income level. CPA’s like this woman obviously have other accounting, bookkeeping, and payroll services that can generate year round revenue without some of the tax time drama CPA’s can see!

Again, sorry for not posting the link before it was archived. It serves as great inspiration for devoted spouses who want to take their trade home to care for their family!

I don’t quite understand this New York Times article.

Women seem to be leaving the workforce in droves. They say it’s the bad economy. Don’t bad economies force more women to work who’d otherwise stay home?

Here’s their explanation:

After moving into virtually every occupation, women are being afflicted on a large scale by the same troubles as men: downturns, layoffs, outsourcing, stagnant wages or the discouraging prospect of an outright pay cut. And they are responding as men have, by dropping out or disappearing for a while.

Now later in the article is how the women they interviewed described their situation:

“If I were a single parent or did not have benefits,” Ms. Samson said, “I would have had to find a job. I could not have gone back to school to get my degree and the promise it holds of a better job.”

It sounds like they’re making a rational choice because they have an alternative stream of income but not that they are “leaving the workforce” per se.

I wonder how many are starting work at home businesses and only “appear” to be leaving the workforce?

Read it for yourself at New York Times
