I have family members living in Michigan and we have been talking about taking a trip to see them. From where they live, Ontario is a fairly routine drive and they mentioned going to Toronto. So we’ve been looking up things like Rogers Centre Tickets… that’s the old SkyDome. From what I understand it can host either professional foot ball or baseball, though I don’t see myself going to Canada to see either sport!

I told a Texas friend about that and all he could do was brag about something in Texas of course. He mentioned the how they had gotten Toyota Center tickets in Houston and how wonderful that stadium was. And when I asked someone ELSE I thought might know about the stadium there in Canada, they said they had only recently purchased American Airlines Arena tickets in south Florida to see the Miami Heat.

So, I ask again? Has anyone visited this place in Canada? Is it worth making part of your itinerary? Were you able to find ticket brokers who were paid by commission from the stadium or were they buying and reslling at a mark up? Thanks for your input!

A social enterprise built on the triple bottom line philosophy, Thriftopia.com is committed to improving tomorrow by keeping resources working to benefit all people and the planet, while turning a profit. The company’s market includes consumers and businesses ranging from home-based small enterprises to Fortune 500 companies including STAPLES Business Depot, Casino Rama and The Simcoe County District School Board. Headquartered in Barrie, Ontario, Thriftopia.com offers free computer recycling, computer removal, responsible computer afterlife management planning and guaranteed total data destruction services and has plans to expand its offering through contract services and franchise collection centers.

Their work is threatened by the Ontario government’s latest proposals.

Says Thriftopia, the Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) is a government supported “puppet” group controlled by Panasonic, Sony, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, HP, HBC, and Dell who want to control the e-waste market in the province. They threaten to put the small company out of business.

Sounds about right unfortunately.

From The Sault Star

Sheila Hatherley makes it into her Connecticut office two or three times a year tops.
The rest of the time, she’s at a computer in Sault Ste. Marie, doing her job as clinical site manager for a major U.S. pharmaceutical company, over the Internet.

From her computer in the Sault, Hatherley oversees clinical trials at clinics and hospitals across the U.S. She never goes to any of the sites she manages, but with her connection to the company network and the contacts she maintains via instant messaging software, “for the most part it is identical,” to being in the office.

Hatherley said he is aware of one company in the U.S. where managers get a bonus for every employee they can convince to work at home.

RuralEx is a new telecommunications service provider based in Saskatoon Canada.

As you can read in this article about RuralEx the company’s purpose, in part, is to provide home based call center jobs in this rural section of Canada. Here’s how the owner describes what’s going on:

Weber is planning to tap into a somewhat forgotten workforce with the launch of his new company. The entrepreneur believes the work from home services provided by RuralEx, such as technical support, outbound marketing and market research, will appeal to stay-at-home parents, the recently retired, rural workers reluctant to travel for work and people with mobility challenges. Starting with 25 out-of-office positions, Weber hopes to expand his in-home workforce to 100 employees by the end of the year.

“I believe strongly that the future of employment exists in remote employment. If you can imagine being able to select from the best people in the world as opposed to the best people in Saskatoon, I think that is where employment is going to go,” he said.

RuralEx employees based out of the home have the same responsibilities and career opportunities as any other worker, he said, explaining just because people can work in their pyjamas doesn’t mean they can be lazy.

“I think there’s a bit of a stigmatism in some cases about a work-from-home environment, but this is essentially doing the same job you would be asked to do here, but in a home environment,” he said. “One of the barriers that we want to make sure that we get past is that this is a real job.”

Here’s an example of one of their job orders.
