The Blog at Etsy.com has a great article on How One Married Couple Created Their Screen Printing Business.
They got their start getting local screen printers to make 25 T-Shirts at a time so they could sell them at local punk rock gatherings. From there, they found a used four color press they could afford to make their own T-Shirts using lots of trial and error and the experience gained from one of the pair’s “day jobs” at a corporate screen printing shop. They’d both work all day and then – at night – operate their screen printing business.
After getting the courage and the capital to open the shop full time, they started getting business customers. Then the Etsy.com sales platform helped them find a whole new market for their creations.
Here’s the part I liked best. Just as they were about to give up as business to local customers died, they brainstormed a few things they could do for “one last try”. Here’s what happened with their Etsy store:
Did you do anything to prepare for the transition into full-time Etsy selling?
Our transition into selling full time was very surreal; it went from selling an item every few days or weeks to selling 20+ items a day, quite literally overnight. We had no system in place and shirts and envelopes everywhere. I had researched how to tag well and photograph to sell, but did not even ponder the shipping side of things. I highly recommend sorting those things out before listing like a maniac.
It’s a great article about the “Internet Lifestyle” that is full of hard work, but also the opportunity to enjoy your family and take some time just to have fun when the sun is out or when the beach beckons… so be sure to read all about How One Married Couple Created Their Screen Printing Business.
