In New technology, expectations help home-based businesses gain ground Candace Renalis notes that at least two trends are converging to promote home business.
1) New technology
2) New expectations
We can all see that the plummeting price of home office technology, access to broad band internet and with that a host of new cost saving tools like “voice of the internet phones” (think Skype or Vonage) makes start up costs for knowledge based businesses incredibly inexpensive compared to years ago.
But low costs means little if there is a stigma attached to something. Formerly if you claimed to be an “attorney”, for instance, your worth and talent were determined in part by whether you were part of a “big name” law firm with it’s attendant overhead.
Now there is less surprise – and less stigma – to working at home. Home based entrepreneurs who once would have been considered cheap and a bit pathetic for working at home or out of a coffee shop are now in many ways considered “cutting edge”… and some consider them positively brilliant and fortunate for having such arrangements.
How times change!
