Lort’s – Funny Name Serious Business

March 7, 2010 by Chuck | 0 Comments

It’s interesting to see how family businesses evolve. In this case we’re talking about a family with the last name of Lorts. Their business is furniture since 1966. With a name like “Huckaby” myself, I can’t really say their name is too funny, but it’s not as “every day” as “Smith” or “Jones”.

Like most family owned businesses in America, they have had to find their niche or die at the hands of big multinational corporations. The Lort’s family got it’s start when huge “Early American” style furniture was in vogue, but had to adapt to huge amounts of competition by creating a wider variety of pieces – for every room in the house – and also become known for their unique finishes, especially those that add an antiquing effect to a piece of furniture. They’re still going strong even now, but it hasn’t been without paying the price of specialization.

Is there a lesson there for work at home entrepreneurs?
