Free Donuts – Good Marketing or Crime?

A Ventura County hardware store thought putting out a box of donuts and a pot of coffee for their customers was just good business – and it was for 15 years.

For the most part customers welcomed it for what it was – a kind hearted gesture of good will. It was an easy way for a hardware store to set itself apart from the competition and bond with its customer base.

As I said, it worked for 15  years.

Then an “anonymous customer complaint” brought the “health department” in and they decided they had “jurisdiction” over this matter.

Whether that’s true or not (never ask a bureaucrat if they have jurisdiction, they think they have it all the time about everything) they’ve raised such hell that the friendly hardware store has to find another way to be friendly.

And then these same politicians will whine and complain when businesses won’t relocate to their community and wonder why.
