As many know, Rupert Murdoch, the head of the Fox News empire declared people would soon be having to pay to read his news.
Advertising alone, he said, didn’t pay enough to let freeloaders like you and me just surf to their website for content. No, HE WILL MAKE US PAY.
Well, so far, that hasn’t happened.
Unless Mr. Murdoch does better than his competitor, that transition may be a long time coming.
Here’s why… a competitor who spent millions changing their online publishing format and stopped letting people view their site for free three months ago has only received 35 paid subscriptions in that time.
The site only has other “premium subscribers” because some are given free access because they pay for cable service from the conglomerate!
Ouch!
Read it and weep Rupert:
After Three Months, Only 35 Subscriptions for Newsday’s Web Site
From what I can tell, PAID SUBSCRIPTION sites are pretty narrowly focused “niche” sites, not online general news.
