Single-Term Keywords - Worth Ranking for them?

Single Term Keywords vs. “Long Tail Keywords”… which should you go after? Jonathan Leger makes the case that multiple term keywords help you identify what your prospect is seeking and how to serve a particular marketplace. In other words, how not to invest your time and effort ranking for searches that won’t appreciate what you’ve accomplished anyway.

He mentions his own situation of ranking a page for a one word medical term. It was so broad, it was for him not worth the effort ultimately. I think when you’ve read it, you can understand the point he makes.

The sticking point comes when deciding just how long “tail” on the key word you want to rank for. If you could “corner the market” on a term that gets 500 searches per month and make a certain $300 per month… would it be “worth it” to you? Only you know the answer to that question for your particular business plan.

There are exceptions to the “one term” rule as Jonathan notes.

Is it worth ranking for single-term keywords?
