Here’s a Nashville Business Directory for Nashville TN Businesses from 1855! It’s linked to the actual Nashville Business Directory from 1855 that has been scanned and uploaded by Google. This is actually only one volume of the multi volume set that year.
I’m blogging about this as a test of WordPress’ power as a content platform to create sites that help serve as directories for local businesses and to demonstrate the software’s ability when properly used to help businesses secure favorable organic search rankings. (In other words I was a little board taking you through the baby steps of using WordPress and wanted to demonstrate for myself how well it actually works.)
Anyway, here’s the cover of that Nashville TN Business Directory:
This previous post ranked quickly and well so this is my second test.
I’m wondering if linking to this Google book listing might help this post do even better. That remains to be seen of course but you can at least see how I’m trying to test blog posts for their ability to rank for local search related terms.
This previous directory for middle TN had as its claim to fame that it contained “the names, business, and residence of all heads of families, business firms, etc., etc., for the city of Nashville and suburbs.” An oft quoted passage from the directory appears in several other works indexed by Google books in subsequent years. It goes “A poor man, with seldom more than a single pack-horse on which the wife and infant were carried, with a few clothes and bed-quilts, a skillet and a small sack of meal, was often seen wending his way along the narrow mountain trace, with a rifle upon his shoulder — the elder sons carrying an axe, a hoe, sometimes an auger and a saw, and the older daughters leading or carrying the smaller children.”
How that related to business in Nashville TN, I’m not sure, but it was a popular description of Middle TN in those times!
A Nashville Business Directory these days, of course, is as likely to be online like this one at InNashville.net. It is a growing listing of businesses and professional practices in Nashville TN but does not claim to be the exhaustive numbering of every street attempted by the 1855 work. What it lacks in exhaustive detail, it hopefully makes up for in utility for internet users - especially mobile internet users - to find the products, services, businesses, and professionals they need in “Music City USA”. I’ll let you know how it does or you can, of course, search for yourself.
