I’ve already mentioned some ideas to help you sell more in a recession.
Adrian Ling has a good post on Opportunities in Recession.
He mentions a variety of opportunities that exist online and off line. You may agree with them, or may not.
But one thing he suggests is worth building on … learning a tool and maximizing your skills with it.
He mentioned this in terms of installing scripts.
You can either choose to associate yourself with that script so you become known as the “expert” on it.
Or you can learn a tool so well that you know what it can do and it becomes your “shortcut” for whatever your customers want.
Your small business customers, for instance, don’t care if you’re using WordPress or Joomla. They just want to know if you can get them more new customers and more repeat customers.
It’s up to us to know what these tools can do and explain that it simple language.
Many people who want to work at home never learn to use a tool…
Writing
Software
Websites
Whatever.
They are looking for someone to give them a tool and work it for them.
Find your tool! Use it!

Hey Chuck, came across your blog on twitter.
Thats some great advice. It’s true that many people never really master a tool. I think the wide variety of tools out there now makes it harder then ever to pick something to master. However if you want to add real value for your customers taking the time to figure a couple tools out could be worth a lot.
A recession is the time for small businesses to jump on customers that big companies lost. They just have to know how to find them.
