The End of Unlimited Internet?

September 3, 2008 by Chuck | 0 Comments

Here’s an article about the Big Cable Internet providers.

They’re known for selling their bundled services… Cable TV, Internet, and Phone service.

Now they’re whining about people using the services too much?

Is The End of Unlimited Internet Near?

Let’s be honest. “Unlimited” always has real limits in time and space. Skype’s “unlimited” phone calls to the US and Canada really means 10,000 minutes per month. Until too many people take them up on that offer  of course.

But now that there’s a REAL number involved, at least there can be competition.

The ceiling is 250 gigabytes per month. Supposedly this will affect only 1% of their customers.

But shouldn’t this have to pass the scrutiny of public service commissions (or their equivalent) where they have franchises? These are after all monopolies in their areas of operation. You may be able to switch to DSL, but you can’t switch to another cable company and get the same bundled service usually.

The big question is…where is any objective monitoring? With electricity usage you can check your own meter and see what was used. That’s not true with the internet.

How will this affect work at home business? It remains to be seen. Hopefully they can function under the limits these companies impose.
