Check Laws Before Starting A Home Business

This is the type of announcement that’s common in the work at home newspaper article world…

It’s the work at home business equivalent to “don’t pay to learn how to stuff envelopes at home” boilerplate.

“Check with your local zoning authorities”

I really never quite understand by things like a “home medical transcription service”… do they mean a solo transcriptionist?

But they are right. Starting a garage or nuclear waste dump at your home may get you into trouble.

On a more serious note… the basic question is whether the zoning laws cover telecommuters or people operating a website?

Probably most local zoning codes are woefully out of date and unable to distinguish between these solo operations and something that may impact the neighbors.

I’d suggest quiet inquiries. You may find nobody really has a clue but that their first instinct is to say “no” to avoid thinking.  If you have an attorney friend or realtor who are used to dealing with such matter… that may be the place to start with some discreet questions.

Many locales recognize home based occupations and distinguish them from businesses.
