Wall Drug - Started As A Home Based Business

I’ve been out and around and found an interesting story about a work at home business… the famous Wall Drug

In 1931, a pharmacist named Hustead purchased the pharmacy in the middle of the South Dakota Badlands at a geological formation known as “The Wall”, hence the name, “Wall Drug”.

Their in-laws told them “you’ll never make it out there!”

To save money they stayed in rooms at the back of the store. So it was a “work at home” business.

And, for the record, they weren’t making it.

Until one day Dorothy got the idea to give away “free ice water” to passersby on the hot highway long before “air conditioning”.

They still give away free ice water today. They also sell 5 cent hot coffee. Don’t worry, the extras people buy have allowed them to build a 76,000 square foot business-attraction that brings in up to 20,000 people per day.
