Telecommute from Paris?

Frank Michael Russell from the Mercury News waxes eloquent on why you might want to start telecommuting from Paris these days thanks to rising costs on the west coast.

Yay, America! Yes, our economy has been struggling, and yes, our dollar has been lagging against the euro, the British pound and even the Canadian dollar. But look on the bright side: We’ve become a much more competitive place to do business, at least according to a study by auditors and consultants KPMG. Many American metro areas – Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth and Tampa, Fla., among them – are now less expensive than European cities such as Frankfurt, London and Manchester, England. On the other hand, costs are still sky-high here in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area (including Silicon Valley), the most expensive locale in the United States, but that’s the cost of doing business in paradise. Oddly enough, the study said the Bay Area is more costly than traditionally very expensive New York. And oddly enough, New York is now more expensive than traditionally très chère Paris. (You probably can see where we’re going here: Why not use all that technology we invented to telecommute from Paris?)
