Some people work at home to balance their lifestyle. Finns work at home because they’re workaholics evidently. At least that’s what I gather from this piece at YLE News
Finland is one of top countries in Europe in terms of how people experience time pressures at work. According to a report in the newspaper Keskisuomalainen, one-third of people with jobs say that, at least sometimes, they take work home with them.
The figures are based on studies carried out at the University of Tampere and the University of Jyväskylä.
In many countries, employees do some of their work from home in order to better integrate their jobs with family life. However, according to Jouko Nätti, Professor of Social Policy at the University of Tampere, this is a concept that just does not function in Finland.
“Here, people take work home with them in order to do their jobs more effectively,” Says Nätti.
Typically, those doing paid work at home are highly educated employees, two-thirds of whom take uncompleted tasks from the office to finish them at home.
A study by Professor Nätti shows that most people who do work at home are not actually getting paid for the extra hours. Fully 58% of work done at home brings employees no special financial benefits.
According to a general survey of working conditions, people in Finland are also keener on cyber-commuting in Finland than elsewhere in Europe.
