“Funny” ever since installing VISTA on one computer, my Firefox freezes and crashes all the time.
It COULDN’T be anything malicious in VISTA that keeps the competition from working COULD IT?
Have any of my readers had this problem?
Is there a patch — or should I just break down and get a MAC?

firefox is crashing everyday on my XP machine – only started happening in 2008 – new firefox version? particular windows upgrade? who knows…

Firefiox crashes EVERY SINGLE DAY, and I even upgraded to Vista Ultimate to maybe enhance crap Vista. No- everything is still slow, programs take a good 5 seconds to even respond to my commands, and reboots are a constant. Oh and the blue screen of death- BACK. The people at Firefox seems like they don’t even notice this…. drives me NUTS.

It happens to me on XP SP2 and it drives me nuts. Pretty soon I’ll switch to slimbrowser or one of the others.

Firefox now crashes on me multiple times each day on Windows XPSP2. It started in Mar 2008. No new add-ons, either. In fact, I’ve removed all of the non-default options. I blame the updates beginning with 2.0.12, but I can’t find the cause or cure. Time to switch to Opera I guess!
lucy on March 26th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Interesting. This just started happening to me yesterday – it crashes several times a day on Windows XP SP2. I, too, have removed any new add-ons, but I don’t have many. The only advice I can find is to remove the profile and reinstall. I don’t like that advice.
SGF on April 16th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
It’s happening to me too on Vista Business. It started right around the same dates and has been getting worse. I’ve completely stopped using Firefox (as of yesterday) because I would have to restart at least 5 times a day!
I’ve been using Vista Business with no problems for a good 6 months, and since it started all on the same day, and I have no problems with anything else, seems like it’s Firefox.
Peta on May 1st, 2008 at 10:18 pm
I too am experiencing crashes upt to 6-8 times per day, as I work Internet both for work and pleasure it is a really pain. Start edwith the V2.00 update, before that Perfect, I was wrapped, now not so, seriously considering moving over to Opera or one of the others, any feed back on a better one.
Need to have good password collection as FF does that very well, would hate to have to redo 100,s of those.

Mine started yesterday, after moving to a new laptop. Installed firfox and my usual add ons and the trouble started. Flash and javascript heavy sites seemed to be the culprit. XPL Link Checker also listed as troublesome

I just upgraded to Vista. I now get 10-20 crashes per day. The crashes occur when closing the program and when changing websites.
Is there a fix or do we go back to IE.
Elisa on June 6th, 2008 at 6:57 am
I found this thread through Google, so it could be that everyone has left off (since it now seems to be two months plus since the last post). However, I just started using Vista (against my wishes) and I am having the FF crash issue – so far 6 times today and counting. seems that this started happening just after I installed updates (yesterday)for the version of Ultimate that came with my new laptop.
Did anyone resolve this, btw? because I agree whole-heartedly – it is very annoying.
George on June 8th, 2008 at 7:32 am
Knowing Microsoft, they see themselves losing IE market share to FireFox and are intentionally crippling it. At the very least, they aren’t going out of their way to fix it.
Sounds like a crazy conspiracy theory, but look at their predatory behavior in the past. What they can’t win in the courts they have to do through more subtle means.

Firefox doesn’t crash for me — it just stops getting data from the Net. Launching IE shows that my connection still works. Killing the process doesn’t work. Reboot is the only solution thus far. Happen only in Vista… Works find on XP.

Hi there,
After installing FF3 on my XP box which has been stable for ages, I am now having major issues.
I have managed to alleviate some of the problems, but not all.
I posted the problem & my own solution that worked here – http://www.twenty20.co.za/bron/?p=16
Charles Pergiel on July 8th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
AVG 8.0 Linkscanner may be the culprit.
Chuck on July 9th, 2008 at 6:36 am
Since there’s no AVG products on this machine of mine, I doubt it. But thanks.
Steve on July 24th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
I just upgraded to XP Pro yesterday (believe it or not!) from 2000 Pro and Firefox crashes multiple times daily. However, it was doing it prior to the upgrade as well; so I’m not sure we can blame Bill Gates. Other suggestions are the AVG anti-virus link-scanner and the flash software from Adobe. I have them all, so I can’t deduce the culprit from my machine. When working, I WAY prefer Firefox to IE, however, so I wish I could get it fixed.
John on August 24th, 2008 at 7:55 am
XP SP3. FF2 started crashing randomly shortly after the install of AVG w/ link scanner. However, I completely uninstalled it and the problem persisted. I removed all FF plugins to no avail. I updated to FF3, but it still crashes. It seems to mostly crash when I close a window and have other windows still open. As a developer I usually have several windows with multiple tabs open. Even though IE7x is a hundred times better than all previous versions, it still feels like taking a big step backwards to use it, so I will continue to search for this cause because I am ready to completely reformat my comps to fix this

Firefox crashes on my xp, even with no extensions, every.damn.day!! I’ve had it and trashing it until whatever needs fixin’ is fixed!

Have you made the switch to Firefox 3.0? I was having a few loading problems with Firefox on Vista Basic, but those problems have pretty much disappeared with the upgrade.

My firefox crashes on close every time.

Mine Firefox has been crashing the same as everyone else’s so I went and installed FF 2.0.0.16 and it has not crashed once…just a thought

I’ve been using 2k for many years happily and also FF, my HD died so I thought I would give XP sp2 a try. I installed FF Gecko/20080829 Firefox/2.0.0.17
Crashing every day. This is a very fresh install new HD etc. This happened with no other apps installed!!
My gut feeling is this is a FF prob with Java as I can replicate the problem and eradicate it 100% by enabling/disabling Java!
Java is a must for plenty of webs so not an option to disable really, but this might help confirm if you guys have the same problem I’m having!
I’ve supported PC’s from DOS to current minus Vista, but this does look like a FF problem this time.
Has anyone tried rolling back to a previous Ver of FF!
That’s my next step and if it doesn’t work I’ll downgrade to Win 2k as IMHO it’s more stable.
John on November 14th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
I have had Firefox crash every day on my winxp sp2 system. I really thought it was Windows. But if I shut down Firefox at night, I don’t have to reboot in the morning. Nice product!
After a couple of days of use, I think the latest version 3.04 of Firefox solves the problem.
Everybody wants something cool, something not by Microsoft, so they says how great FF is. But until now, it’s been a buggy mess.
John on November 14th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Maybe all version of FF haven’t been crash prone, but apparently since March it is.
wedding photographer in cambridge on January 7th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
FF is notorious for crashing regardless of the operating system, there must be an bug-fix release almost every week. It’s still preferable to IE though!

FF crashes on start-up now (didn’t yesterday).Using Vista 64 bit. Wassup with that?
Andrea on February 21st, 2009 at 7:54 am
YES, Firefox crashes every single day for me. Usually several times a day. I have Vista now, and its been since then for me. It without fail it also crashes every single night. Several times a day I have to go into my task manager to stop the app manually for it even start it again.
Bombadee on February 24th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
I had the same problem with FF. Constantly crashing and failing to get info from the web. After trying all of the fixes that were suggested I finally tried a few different Browsers and as a few have noticed Opera is a good alternative. I finally found a goodie called K-Meleon. It is very similar to FF and addons are available for it. The big benefit so far,,,,No more crasahes. If Opera and K-Meleon do not crash it is definitely a FF problem that Mozilla should address and pronto. It seems that a lot of frustrated surfers are changing. Too bad too because FF “WAS” at one time a great browser. But no more. I am still using XP pro so I do not think it matters what OS you are using.

Don’t get too impatient with FireFox when Vista is likely the problem. I switched to FireFox because IE was constantly crashing in Vista. Unfortunately, FireFox also crashes, to the tune of every 10 minutes or so. The feature to restore your session when FireFox restarts, coupled with a fast restart time, makes the crashes less painful. There’s no reason for me to switch back to IE since that crashes too. I think it’s a bug planted in Vista to sabatoge FireFox (and probably other browsers) that happened to bite IE as well. I mean we all know that M$ is incompetent as well as malicious.
Kenneth on June 26th, 2009 at 11:11 am
While I’m always frustrated with M$ as well, no one gives them enough credit compared to Apple. Quickly think about an Apple: they have complete control over what hardware is installed in their systems and to some degree the software as well. Think about Windows: many many hardware and software vendors with so many different configurations of both that there’s no way M$ could fully test each and every scenario before launching a new operating system. Not only that, but PC users seem to be tighter with money and try to keep old hardware not designed for the new software/operating systems which also cause issues…
OK. /STOP_RANT
I too have been having many crashes with Firefox in Vista, but only started happening lately. And it only seems to crash when I close my FF window. I have IE8, FF3 and Google Chrome, all with some degree of issues…
Maybe the internet is getting ready to crash too?
