Storey works, in her own home, baking and selling a line of seven varieties of rum cakes and one whiskey cake. In her spotless, bone-white kitchen, humming along to the monastic music, she creates up to 5,000 cakes a year.
Storey’s business venture has been nearly 20 years in the making.[After giving her creation to friends and co-workers…] “Things went so well, we were forced into business,” he said, adding that Forced Into Business nearly became Storey’s business name (”It was a fleeting thought,” she said) before they settled on the more descriptive Barbara Storey’s Rum Cakes LLC.
Still operating out of home in Cornelius, the fledgling bakery opened in 1992. Storey, 57, steadily grew the business through Steve’s retirement in 2002 and a years-long search that led them to the Hoffman Road area of Independence in January 2007.
