How do recessions effect home businesses?

Whether you believe one is likely or whether you believe that – at least personally – you’ve already been in one, it pays to think this through.

Many times recessions START home businesses… people need a side income, people get laid off and need some income, or people get “downsized” and decide to strike out on their own as a consultant or other occupation that can begin at home.  They decide to make some extra money because they find a unique product to sell, for instance. In these cases it’s sink or swim and many such home businesses will be set aside when traditional employment for the individual picks up. Some folks who’ve always experienced seasonal layoffs keep a perpetual “side” business running. It’s just a way of life not a “new trend” for many people.

For existing home businesses, it remains to be seen.

If the service provided is – say – cosmetology and all your customers worked at the plant down the road that just shut down, business could be slow. Customers in that field tend to “stick” if they like you but they may not come as much. When you see them in the store next week with green hair it means they’re trying to “do it themselves” and save money.

If you’re selling a product or service considered to be a “luxury” instead of a “necessity”  you could be affected if you serve the middle class. It may mean that some marketing needs to be done reach out to folks unaffected by the prevailing slowdown and that can mean acquiring new skills that still may or may not work.

Having a plan for weathering a recession means knowing your numbers before the recession hits, experimenting with marketing before it hits, so that as soon as your numbers slide you can have some “tools” handy to help your revenue pick up.

If you’re selling things online for a living it pays to ask yourself what you’ll do if the sales slow down? Are your suppliers steady? What if your supplier goes “Belly up” from the recession themselves… are their alternate sources of inventory you can rely upon?

It’s a good time of the year as you prepare your taxes to review your numbers… revenue, profits, customers and revenue per customer.

It’s a good time to ask “what works for me?” in getting new customers and see if you can do more of it.

It’s a good time to see you have the supplies and sources you need to do business.

How will a recession affect your home business? You probably have many answers at your fingertips if you’ll look into it!

The reason I have my own home business is partly because of recessions and layoffs that are associated with such. Depending on what you sell or have to offer, most businesses should do well no matter what the economy throws your way.
