Escape From Cubicle Hell

Home businesses used to be fairly limited in their scope. You typed at home, you did medical transcription at home, you did word processing at home. Get the picture? Or you said you “worked at home” when you really did network marketing but were a bit ashamed of it way back when because it meant you might have a garage full of soap you were having a hard time selling. It was a huge leap ahead for the industry when ebay came along.

Now Baby Boomers who don’t want to completely retire and Generation Y 20-something’s who can’t stomach working for “the man” are all working at home in a much broader variety of industries.

In the past “home business” meant a packaged business opportunity usually. Today, people are taking what they used to do corporately or might do corporately and doing it at home.

“Many people who work from home today are doing the jobs they’ve always done in the corporate world,” says Jeff Zbar, home business expert and creator of chiefhomeofficer.com. “They find that they’ve done something all their lives and have a trade or skill that they can tap into.” As a result, there has been a migration of professionals — many of whom have been successful in careers such as accounting, business coaching, and human resources — into the home-based business sector, where they are exploring entrepreneurship in the capacity of independent consultants.
