Crain’s Detroit Business article on Second career: Buyouts fuel entrepreneurship, but be wary of pitfalls is necessary reading for anyone in a corporate setting who’s facing a “retirement buyout”. This man invested his buyout in starting a business from home. It was his own business, not a business package evidently, and his results.

Lower level workers on factory lines often receive training packages if the business shut down is due to foreign competition.  It used to be just “white collar” workers getting these buyouts, though that’s changing especially in Detroit.
