It’s a common check cashing scheme in the US. This made the Canadian news. It’s amazing that the woman says she knows”People I know [who] have done similar things and they’ve been credible…”  Really? That’s hard to believe!

Audrey East recently received a phone call she wasn’t expecting: from the Toronto Metropolitan Police.

She is the victim of a scam artist, and thankfully the culprit was caught before he was able to do any real harm to her.

“I was kind of shocked,” she said.

“I got home one day and my husband told me that the Toronto Police called and said they caught this guy who was running a scam.”

She said she answered a classified ad that was listed in one of the local newspapers for a research analyst job.

“It said ‘Research Analyst Needed’ and that you could just go to this website and apply and work from home,” she said.

“People I know have done similar things and they’ve been credible, so I didn’t really think anything of it. All it said once I filled my address out was that I’d receive an information package.”

It was about two weeks later when the Toronto Police phoned East and told her what happened.

“They said I was one of the many people that this guy had roped in with this ad,” she said.

“In the supposed information package there was a cheque to cash and it instructed that you have to deposit it, and then send a certain amount back for fees. If a person cashed it, they would not only lose the money that they had given to this guy, but the cheque would end up being bad and the person who cashes it would have to deal with it.”
