One of the barriers for employees to “go solo” and work at home (or in that “Third Place”) as a “Free Agent” has always been the issue of “benefits”, particularly health insurance.
That barrier may increasingly vanish as businesses of every stripe - if they offer health coverage - are shifting the health care cost back to the workers.
Many people feel they could make more on their own but are afraid of not having health coverage. The new reality is that you can be employed and if you had health coverage once, you may not have it later.
As health care costs are shifted to the workers anyway, how will this effect the work force of the future?
How many of us will be completely “Free Agents”? That remains to be seen…
