I accidentally learned how a local home business morphed into one of the most popular restaurants in town.
There have been several restaurants in town recently that are now OUT of business.
They started because someone had the bright idea that they could make money in the restaurant business but didn’t even know if they’ve have any customers.
Here’s how this restaurant avoided that problem.
A retired state worker did some catering on the side.
It developed into a contract with a local day care provider to provide hot lunches every day to one of the preschools in town 3 days per week. The other days are pizza and “Krystals”, the southern version of the “White Castle” hamburger.
They provide 50 to 60 meals 3 times per week at about $3 per meal.
That generated $450 to $540 per week and a good profit for a “retired” lady.
But they had extra food left over daily it seemed so they started selling hot lunches on a delivery basis around town.
After a while, they were delivering to 20 locations daily… without a retail location.
Then they thought … “Maybe we should open up a restaurant?”
So they did.
But only AFTER they were making a profit thanks to their home business. From day “1″ they knew they’d have a steady stream of customers unlike the many failed restaurant ventures that have closed their doors in the same area.
