It’s not just home businesses that are trying to cut corners. “Name brand” software as you know is incredibly expensive… that’s why Bill Gates is rich of course. Forbes.com ran an article on using open source software to cut down on expenses.
One of the software packages they mention is Open Office which is a free open source collection of software for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, etc. It’s supposedly as functional as Microsoft Office but I’ve had college students who used earlier versions to save on the cost of even the student version of office. They said that their professors couldn’t always open it with Microsoft. It’s version 2.3 right now. Maybe that will get better in version 3 that’s coming out soon.
