Stat-a-holism is an emerging disorder of the unsuccessful online marketer.
Its symptoms include
1) Putting up a website
2) Doing whatever your think will promote the website, and
3) Checking your stat counter compulsively throughout the day to see what’s going on.
4) Going nuts when it doesn’t change since you checked it 30 seconds ago and
5) Decompensating because your stats aren’t improving every hour
Stat-a-holism is counter productive.
Sure, you need to check your stats at least daily and sometimes more to see what’s going on especially if you’re paying for advertising on a pay per click basis to make sure you’re not getting robbed blind.
But when you’re dependent on free traffic, checking a stat counter too often can be a sign that you’ve been sucked into this counterproductive compulsion!
There are, as yet, no 12 step programs for Stat-a-holics, so I offer this advice…
- STOP!
- Limit your stat checks to morning, noon, and afternoon.
- Do what BUILDS traffic when you’d otherwise be wasting in checking your stats.
That means…
… write new content
… promote your existing content to other online venues with a personal email that starts, “Hey,I thought you might find this interesting…”
… basically do ANYTHING else that’s productive instead of checking those darn stats. They really haven’t changed that much!

Stat-o-holic! Chuck, until I learned better that was me. No telling how many hours I spent just going back again and again to see if I was getting any clicks. That’s absolutely nuts. Thanks for posting this…I think every new or near-new marketer needs to know this.
Keep up the good work!
