Lessons from a Student Career Fair – Part 5 – Promotional Items

People are trained to think that going to a Trade Show means  giving away free stuff at great expense.

What good does that really do for your business? Usually just creates a loss to write off on your taxes.

You could give away free tatoos to people at a Trade Show that had your name and phone number and still not get any calls unless it’s from lawyers wanting to sue you. (Though giving away free temporary tattoos with your name, phone and a colorful logo might not be bad… maybe on their foreheads or arms?)

But most peope waste too much money on promotional items.

Let’s face it, there’s always some bum who’s going to grab up every pen you put out.

They’re thieves and they’re not going to do one penny’s worth of business with you.

With promotional items, you need to trade them for their contact information for them to be of any long term value to you.

Rather than just put out free stuff, create “packages” of what you’d give away anyway.

Then give away things after they’ve registered for your giveaway drawing or otherwise given you their contact information (business card) so you can do business later.
