As I was at the Fair, I realized that the people there for the most part weren’t “selling” anything so they had less motivation than some because they didn’t have to pay for a booth.
But there was one community college there that is always in marketing mode.
For instance they wrote a grant from the Federal Government to encourage kids who’d never had a family member to to post-secondary school or college have the courage to try that. Sure, they get some students out of that, but it sends students to many other schools as well.
This school is just over the state line about an hour from here.
In my opinion, the other community college with a branch here tends to assume everyone will come their way. From what I’ve observed, they are not as proactive in recruiting. (I’ll leave it at that, though I could go on.)
Guess which school met every student at the front door to give them a plastic bag with the school’s logo to hold all the “stuff” they’ll get at the Career Fair?
And guess which school sat at their booth waiting for people come to them?
So the other than realizing that no marketing method (newspapers, direct mail, trade shows or internet) will make people do your bidding automatically, the real key to these things is to have a proactive mindset.
More on how that works out in the next post.
