When Is It Time For Your Home Business To Leave Home?

Did you start your home business and think you’d stay home forever? Many people have illusions of “working at home in their pajamas” and raking in the money. Along with that is the assumption they’ll just be clicking away on their keyboard for a few hours and watching soap operas, playing golf or doing something else “fun” the rest of the time.

But many “fun businesses” take on a life of their own even if they start at home and the “raking in the money without working” part never seem to materialize unless, possibly, you’re selling information products.  If you’re moving product and meeting people, you’re going to end up leaving the house unless you’re one of those 4 Hour Work Week types who outsources everything.

For the home-based business, this means assessing the costs and benefits of working at home and when it’s time to move out from home.

As soon as your family business begins to grow to a stand-alone small business scale, it is important to plan the transition to rental and shared space and to begin to check out when you will need to own premises.

This is the time to revisit both your original business plan, the stories you told your bank manager, and your marketing plans. This means a new structure, new business and marketing plans, and a change in the management and leadership style of the business.
