It seems like we’ve seen this warning 10 million times – just this week!
People wanting to work at home should be aware that there are some legitimate costs. For example: Some home based call center firms require the applicant to pay for a background check since they’ll be taking credit card information over the phone. Other home based call center companies require workers to set up business entities so there can be NO confusion that the person is self-employed (they’ve had too many “independent contractors” think they were “employees” evidently). Home based transcriptionists sometimes have to pay for their own business phone service when connecting to older transcription systems. All of these work at home opportunities pay for their own internet. There ARE legitimate costs associated with working from home. Not all are scams.
But in case you DIDN’T know you probably can’t earn $30,000 per month addressing envelopes at home in your spare time, be sure to read this latest warning…
From the Scotsman
Q: I have discovered that my elderly father responded to an appeal for home workers. He thought he could get a bit of extra money by sticking address labels on envelopes for a company that advertised in his local post office. Of course, he has never been paid. Could you remind people not to respond to these offers?
A: We have heard of similar cases. In one, a Citizens Advice client responded to a home working scheme with the offer of earning £500 a month. The pensioner paid a joining fee of £39.95. He received address labels but had to pay to photocopy a document and buy envelopes and stamps. He has never received payment and has been left £995 out of pocket.Consumer Direct Scotland is warning consumers to be wary of bogus home working schemes that make wild promises of earnings of up to £24,000 a month.
Work-at-home scams are get-rich-quick schemes usually advertised in shop windows, magazines and local newspapers and are particularly attractive to students, people with young children, the disabled and the elderly. Thousands of people have been caught out by falling for the claim that they are genuine opportunities to work from home.
