An out of control building commissioner issued cease and desist claiming they were in violation of the current zoning bylaws because they “pushed the envelope”.

Now certain people in the town are scrambling to create an ordinance that keeps the commissioner at bay.

Currently residents are allowed to have one employee, one commercial vehicle on their lot, and can use 20 percent of their square footage for the business.

“There are many small businesses that can live in harmony in a residential neighborhood,” Richards said. “The businesses that were targeted were those that pushed the envelope.”

Complaints against current business owners pertain to number of vehicles on the property, numbers of employees, storage of product material on residential property and light manufacturing. Richards believes businesses established after the bylaw was created in 1962 should move to a business zone or comply with the current law. The proposed bylaw is currently on the town warrant, which can be found on the East Longmeadow Web site.
