Marketplaces “hate” monopolies - at least where competition is allowed. To date and the foreseeable future, the Windows operating system has a near monopoly on business software applications.
Will VMWare intrude into Microsoft’s monopoly - or rather - allow other users to get a piece of the pie without requiring Windows users to switch wholesale?
Imagine being able to use the best Windows programs, the best MAC programs, etc on the same machine as needed.
VMware recently became more of a competitive threat in the server market when it announced this month that it would embed virtualization software known as a “hypervisor” in servers produced by prominent computer makers Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and others.
If a hypervisor is part of the server, server manufacturers may be less inclined to pre-install Windows operating systems on the servers, which could eat into Microsoft’s business, analysts said.
As usual, time will tell…
