As nice as free word press themes are, some are a real pain to work with for non programmers like me and probably you.
For instance, I downloaded one theme and it didn’t use the widget system for rearranging the sidebar (so wordpress is as almost as friendly as blogger’s new system in that regard) and I couldn’t automatically make the posts be listed by date and title without messing with the .htaccess file some more.
So when you’re checking for free themes, read the comments first. Try to find a DEBUGGED theme! Or hire someone!
