Work At Home Medical Transcription Booming

Here’s a great article in the Tennessean about some folks who went from jobs like factory work, truck driving, etc. to work at home in medical transcription. One work at home medical transcriptionist is now a medical transcription editor who’s making $50,000 per year.

Here’s the part I liked best…

Steven and Shara Martin of Saint Joseph, Tenn., went from working in manufacturing two years ago to becoming medical transcriptionists with Brentwood-based DTS America Inc.

They also have seen a jump in their earnings from about $7 an hour in the plant to as much as $18 an hour. Shara, who 15 years ago also had done some transcriptions while working for an attorney, likes their new lifestyle.

“Instead of going to a break room and talking to people we don’t know, we have the luxury of going and walking through the garden, picking fresh vegetables, playing with the horses,” said Shara, who also now teaches the transcription class at Columbia State Community College’s satellite campus in Lawrenceburg.

Some people think that voice recognition technology is putting medical transcriptionists out of business, but as the article notes:

Because of the aging population and increased need for electronic medical records that can easily be shared by doctors in different offices, employment of medical transcriptionists was expected to grow 18 percent to 26 percent from 2004 to 2014, according to the latest projections by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Increasingly, companies such as Franklin-based Spheris Inc. are outsourcing work to countries such as India, Pakistan and the Philippines, but there remains a strong demand for well-trained transcriptionists in the United States, the bureau said.

we have MT team and we need more work for our other team members.
