A while back a friend of mine had talked about starting one of those small local newspapers like the one pictured here. He really didn’t have the 50,000 population required to make it work, but maybe there was enough.
I didn’t have a packaged resource to send him to, but if he started talking about it today, I’d at least have him look at this work at home business opportunity I found on ebay: “The Water Cooler Wizard”. I thought it looked interesting.
Obviously no work at home business opportunity is worth anything if you don’t work.
I thought this was a pretty honest presentation:
What cost will I incure to get started?
- This packet cost $99.95.
- Newspaper holders (30 per Edition you open at $1 each = $30 total).
- Labels for the holders ($5 per edition).
- Copies of 1st Edition ($50.00 per edition).
- Gas to drive around local area and do start-up (apx. $25 per edition).
- Some cities / counties will require a business license apx. $35.
- DBA or Ficticious name apx. $25.
- Run DBA in local paper apx. $15.
- Business cards (not a must) $25.
- Membership maint. dues to the WCW Club $10 a week.
All total you can be out of the gate at less than $350.
What Monthly Overhead Cost will I have?
- Printing cost about $400 a month per edition.
- Dues $10 a week per area of 500,000 people
- Gas for Delivering usually $20 a week per edition.
- Grand total of less than $500 a month to operate each edition.
Part of the reason you pay $10 in weekly dues is that they send you content weekly as part of what you’re buying with your weekly “dues”.
And I have to admit, I’m a sucker for a good “Why I wanted to work at home” story like the sellers:
Here’s our story:
My wife and I wanted to raise our family the “right” way. We wanted her to be a stay at home mom and ensure our children were raised with care and kindness and not sent off to daycare. We believed parents raise kids not strangers. We had one problem; too many bills and not enough income.
The answer of course was simple; find something my wife could do out of the home to earn money. We bought so many go nowhere scams in hopes of earning extra money it is embarssing. Along the way we fell into a couple of small businesses that earned “just enough” to make things work. We wanted or better put needed those to generate more money. So, decided to advertise them in local newspapers. Month after month sending checks to newspapers and the business growing just a little bit. We were making it and things were getting better.
Then one day we decided to price the “prime ad space” the ones that generate big hits ”cover spots”. Well, we could not afford it. So, we made costly flyers and littered our local shopping centers and neighborhoods with them to no avale. We kept banging our heads on how does a “little guy” expect to ever get the exposure the need?
Then we came up with the idea of a lifetime! Why not get 40 “little guys” together and put out flyers. This is where the concept was born into existance. A newspaper that would be only “one page”, would service just a local area or “neighborhood” and allow us to advertise our own businesses for free. Then a few months later this newspaper was the only business and our search for a legitimate home based business was finally over.
