Dumbfounded Down Under - Australia Commission Sues Google Over Ads

July 13, 2007 by Chuck | 0 Comments

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says that Google ads are “Deceptive” according to the Silicon Valley San Jose Business News.

Why? Competitive businesses are bidding on one another’s keywords on Google.

Does the commission really believe that the unpaid search results are automatically more authoritative than the paid advertising? If so, they must not use search engines much.

Specifically, Google is being sued because an AdWords advertiser triggered their ads to come up when someone searched for the competition.

I was looking for a website yesterday and the first 8 or 9 “natural search results” were all competitors whose pages were better optimized for the particular keyword!

I know know lots of sharp Aussies. They don’t strike me as people who’d be as easily dumbfounded as this commission.

The result of this lawsuit will simply be less competition and probably worse results for consumers.
