Citywide WiFi considered for San Jose

This is supposed to be good for telecommuters so I’m posting it. I’m all for increasing access to broad band for small and home based businesses. But in the end somebody winds up paying. Many telecommuters would rather “pay” for wifi by paying for food and drink at a coffee shop or other business.

The first line was a real eye catcher: “San Jose officials are pondering free, citywide WiFi, but before any wireless Internet system is set up, they want to know how much it will cost, who will use it or if it can even be installed.”

I’m glad they stopped to ponder whether it was possible and what it would cost. They might want to remember the old adage “There’s no such thing as a free lunch” too. Or the citizen’s who’ll be paying for this project should anyway. Especially since the city is already $16 million in the hole.

From San Jose Mercury News

“We need to be mindful that there is a $16 million deficit,” Murphy said of the city’s general fund shortfall for the 2007-08 fiscal year. “We need to figure out how this won’t be a drain on city resources.”
