Pet Butler is a franchise operation that’s grown to have 80 franchises believe it or not. It may be just what you’re looking for if you want a home based franchise to operate until the business grows. While some wonder if a franchise is needed for this operation, evidently 80 others have paid up because they think they need the support.

Matt “Red” Boswell has knocked off another competitor, further consolidating his hold on the Metroplex’s burgeoning dog poop cleanup business.
His Frisco-based Pet Butler, which operates in Tarrant County, acquired the pet-owning client list of Shovel Jockey for an undisclosed sum after similar takeovers of other area competitors, including Pet Janitor, Scoopadapoopa, Poo Poo Busters, he told us Friday.
Boswell, a self-described entremanure, lists his company title as CEO, for chief excrement officer. He is stepping carefully all the way to the bank.
“We’ve been growing at 25 percent a year,” he said, disclosing that revenues hit $2 million last year, half from more than 1,500 active clients in Dallas-Fort Worth and the rest from franchise fees in 23 states.
“This year we will do over $4 million,” and people no longer think of him as “one crazy, insane, sad, poor fool.”
“We just sold our 80th franchise,” said Boswell, 37, who graduated from Weatherford High School, Weatherford College and Stephen F. Austin State University. Each territory goes for $22,900, and franchisees pay an 8 percent royalty on gross scoop charges.
Clients with one dog pay about $10 per visit, with rates discounted for more pets and greater pickup frequency.
Would-be rivals think it’s a cinch, said Boswell, who founded the company in 1998. It’s not.
“I’ve had competitors go out of business left and right. They think, ‘I’m going to be a millionaire.’ But soon they realize it’s a tough business. Few people know the industry exists. It’s really hard work, and you need insurance.”
