The LA Daily News must get around to reporting on home based business only when it’s part of the political dirt of the day. It seems the City Attorney’s wife is accused of running a consulting business from home without paying some tax she’s supposed to pay on her business. The City attorney did however state that she had paid all income taxes on the business.
So one can earn money, pay state and federal taxes but still be out of “compliance” because of a host of who knows how many laws claiming that more must be paid. I guess they could even claim home based lemonade stands and transcriptionists and telecommuters were really liable to pay more under these laws. Do farmers have to have such licensing? Why should a consultant?
Don’t people have the right to work at home without paying a host of bureaucratic fees and additional taxes that were really designed for businesses with their own storefront?
After all, the taxpayer who pays their property tax and does bookkeeping at home and goes to their clients offices to get her work isn’t a burden on the city. And they aren’t contributing to traffic woes either.
They should be thanking the telecommuter, but then again, this case is probably all about local politics and not about justice.
