Craigslist Considers Expansion Of Help Wanted Fees

Craigslist is considering the expansion of charging fees for help wanted ads.

The 12-year-old company first charged a $25 fee in San Francisco in 1998, adding the fee in Los Angeles and New York in 2004. It has since added the fee in Boston, San Diego, Seattle and Washington, D.C. The fee has climbed to $75 in San Francisco and remains $25 in the other six cities.

Now, craigslist proposes charging the $25 fee to employers looking for workers in Sacramento, Orange County, Chicago and Portland, Ore. The company’s other classified ads — including housing, goods, services and events — would remain free.

Personally I think this is a great idea for weeding out all the “help wanted” ads that violate the Craigslist terms of service. As the article states, many people advertisements for business opportunities in the “Help Wanted” section or try to get people to pay for information products through the ads when they’re solely designed to link people with hourly or salaried employment.

The abuse of the job sites in these cities is prompting the fee consideration according to Craigslist to weed out this spam.

Other ad categories would remain free.
