Here’s the results of a study on “Farmshoring” produced by Virginia Tech titled: “Farmshoring in Virginia: Domestic Outsourcing Strategies for Linking Urban and Rural Economies in the Commonwealth of Virginia.” You can link to all the aspects of the report here or the summary here.
We focused on knowledge-based occupations and industries
with farmshoring potential. These include activities like
computer systems design, data processing and computer
programming, management, scientific and consulting services,
legal services, accounting and other business process
services, and industries such as aerospace, information technology,
electronics manufacturing, health care information,
and biotechnology/pharmaceuticals. We present the business
case for farmshoring in these industries and find that parts of
their business activities are a good fit for the diverse communities
of rural Virginia.
