What’s the future of newspaper advertising? Here are some news items from the Newspaper Association of America.
Depending on your business - whether it’s local or not - it CAN drive traffic. Maybe.
But folks from the Advertising Director at Macy’s and the founder of Craiglist were offering some straight talk to an industry that’s been fat and sassy for quite some time.
But now that’s changing.
Macy’s for instance is now national. They aren’t interested in having hundreds of buyers buying hundreds of ads in different cities. They want just a few buyers able to place ads regionally or nationwide to reach their target market.
Craig Newmark of Craigslist suggested that there’s a great future in the news… as long as people don’t keep thinking the news business must be tied to the printing press! (Ouch!) For him, printed news is preferable but a “luxury”. Craig gets his news from late night comedians. Now that’s frightening. But he likes it because they ridicule the politicians and show their double talk while the traditional media treat them a bit too seriously for their own good.
But the demise of the newspaper - or rather, the humbling of the newspaper industry - is good for small business. Through Google and Yahoo, there may be better opportunities for small and home businesses to get some respect from the newspapers and get more affordable ad options for their smaller operations.
Perhaps even more niche newspapers will result… perhaps one will even be created by you?
