US Post Office Subsidizes Longer Copy Direct Mail

April 23, 2007 by Chuck | 0 Comments

The US Post office is subsidizing longer copy direct mail. Well not exactly, but sort of.

It will actually be possible to send an extra ounce of information for 17 cents instead of the current rate.

This is good news if your direct mail campaign – proven by your in house testing – works best with “long copy” marketing.

One ounce is usually considered to be 4 – 8.5″ x 11″ pages. Some marketing packages sell more when the sales letter is longer. If that’s your situation, the USPS just subsidized your business! Here’ s how:

US POSTAGE GOING UP MAY 14. See the New Rates & Fees

First class will be $.41 for the first ounce. Postcards will be $.26.

However, the rate for 2 oz mail goes down as they are reducing the rate for
additional ounces of first-class mail from 24 cents to 17 cents.

Now: 39+24 = .63
Later: 41+17= .58

So it makes sense to send 2 oz rather than 1 oz. pieces.

Thanks to Alan Canton for this info.
