I don’t doubt that American workers feel powerless and frightened in the face of globalization and many doubt that their children will be better off. One thing’s for sure, if our children try to make a living working in a factory without even a high school education… yes, that isn’t going to work.
What I seriously doubt is that the government has a clue about how to reverse the situation! Or if the clue, then the will. Reversing the situation would involve creating a U.S. tax haven for business and individuals and that would mean giving up power and - worse for them - admitting they weren’t in control of everything. Sweeping Suggestions For Tax Simplification that are relatively small concessions to giving up power never get anywhere because they involve change (and we the populace don’t really believe they’ll change anyway!) Furthermore, government programs that exist today on the brink of implosion aren’t helping anything either.
One option so that workers don’t feel jerked around is an employee owned company as described here: A Stake in the Outcome: Building a Culture of Ownership for the Long-Term Success of Your Business. Companies require capital though and that’s not always something employee groups have.
Whether we like it or not, globalization is here. Work at home businesses are ways to train children to find out how to identify and exploit business niches that let them obtain and above average wage because of specialization.
On to the survey… you may want to read the article too. There’s some indication that the survey itself is skewed to serve a political agenda.
From CNSNews.com
– Nearly 80 percent of workers, both college and non-college alike, no longer believe the next generation will be better off. Nearly half think their children will be worse off.
– Nearly 80 percent of workers view multinational corporations as too powerful and have driven down wages, eliminated health care and retirement security, and disregarded labor laws.
– Nearly 70 percent of workers feel the government doesn’t take action to rein in greedy and unethical behavior by corporations and CEOs.
“The survey also indicates that workers see few opportunities for good jobs while they face the financial insecurity of rising health-care costs, the elimination of pensions, the outsourcing of jobs and wages falling behind living costs,” the release added.
