What’s the workplace of tomorrow look like?
Anyplace where there’s a wireless connection and a flat surface for your laptop. The new term evidently it’s “telecommuter” for these folks… it’s “RAM” – random and mobile workers. What? You can’t be random in a cubicle?
One bit of good news for the venerable public library. Everyone thought that having information online would kill it. Instead, teleworking may just revive them.
From the Birmingham News
All over the Birmingham area, public libraries also are courting officeless workers seeking access to research materials in a wireless and peaceful environment. At the Hoover Public Library, for example, the research room guarantees silence. No cell phones are allowed (so says the large sign on the door) and computer access is plentiful. They probably won’t bring you a cup of coffee, but the tech staff can lend you a wireless card if you don’t have one or if yours quits working, and can often provide light technical support.
At Birmingham Central Public Library downtown, coffee is available at the recently opened Atrium Cafe, positioned near the main-level circulation desk.
“I see lots of laptops open in that area, and people are having small meetings,” says Renee Blalock, associate director of the Birmingham Public Library. “We think it’s a great addition to the library.”
