According to the Greater Cincinnati Business Courier 4 Amway distributors have been ordered to pay $19 million dollars in damages to Proctor and Gamble for spreading rumors that the maker of Pampers and Bounty also worships Satan.
A Salt Lake City jury decided in Procter’s favor on Monday, ending a 12-year legal battle. Procter charged that Randy Haugen and three other distributors sent out the rumors over Amway’s voice-mail system, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. Specifically, they allegedly passed on a myth that Procter’s president at the time - who would have been John Pepper - told a talk show host that the consumer goods maker was affiliated with the Church of Satan.
Procter argues that the rumor cost the company millions of dollars in sales.
